CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR JUNE 8, 2005

JIM DETERS TAKEN BY CLEVELAND INDIANS IN 7th ROUND OF MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
DRAFT

A childhood dream has come true for Jim Deters. On Tuesday afternoon, the
Cleveland Indians selected the recent Calvin College graduate in the seventh
round of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft.

A native of Portage and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Deters
is the first Calvin baseball player to be selected in the Major League Baseball
Draft. He is also the first graduate from an MIAA school to be selected since
Alma's Andy Jacobson was taken in the 1996 MLB Draft.

In addition, Deters was the third NCAA III baseball player selected in the
2005 draft as pitcher Ryan DePietro of Eastern Connecticut State and pitcher
Gregory Reinhard of Wisconsin-Whitewater were selected in the sixth round.
Overall, Deters was the 210th pick in the 2005 draft.

"I've always dreamed of getting a chance to play professional baseball,"
said Deters in an interview last month. "If I get the chance, I'd like to
see how far I can take my dream."

Calvin baseball coach Jim Timmer Jr. is thrilled that Deters will get a chance
to fulfill his life-long dream. "I am extremely excited for Jim Deters and I
know all of his Calvin teammates from the past four years feel the same way,"
said Timmer. "We'll all be rooting for him in pro ball. As good of a
player as he has been at Calvin, he's an even better person and a wonderful
representative of Calvin College. I think that's the biggest reason why
we'll all be rooting for him so hard now that he's about to get his
chance."

A 6-4 right-handed pitcher, Deters recently completed his Calvin baseball
career with a won-loss record of 25-6 and a career ERA of 2.42. He also struck
out 210 batters in 252.1 innings of work during his Calvin career. Deters is
the Calvin career leader in pitching victories, earned run average, strikeouts
and innings pitched. He was graduated from Calvin this past May with a degree
in criminal justice.

This spring, he struck out 20 batters in a game on two separate occasions,
doing it the first time in a game March 29, at Kalamazoo and then achieving the
same feat in a game on April 15, against Olivet. His 20 strikeout-efforts
matched the sixth-highest single-game total in NCAA III baseball history.

According to Timmer, the next step for Deters will be to negotiate a contract
with the Cleveland Indians and then wait for assignment to one of its minor
league affiliates.

The MIAA has sent a handful of players on to the Major Leagues. Among the
notables are Jim Kaat who attended Hope in the late 1950's, Jim Northrup who
attended Alma in the 1960's and Vern Ruhle who attended Olivet in the
1970's. Kaat won more than 280 games as a pitcher in the Major Leagues
while Northrup was a starting outfielder on the 1968 World Champion Detroit
Tigers. Ruhle was a starting pitcher with the Detroit Tigers and later the
Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians and California Angels.
