JIM DETERS NAMED TO ALL-MIDEAST REGION FIRST TEAM IN BASEBALL
For the second time in his collegiate career, Jim Deters has been named to the
Division III All-Mideast Region first team in baseball.
A native of Portage and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Deters
is now eligible for All-America consideration. As a freshman in 2002, he was
also selected to the All-Mideast Region first team.
A 6-4 right-hander, Deters recently completed his collegiate career as the
most dominant pitcher in Calvin baseball history.
As senior this spring, he fashioned a pitching record of 7-1 along with a 2.79
earned run average in 71 innings of work. He also struck out 99 batters and
walked just 17. Deters struck out 20 batters in two separate occasions this
spring, doing so in a March 29 game at Kalamazoo and then again on April 15
against Olivet. In the game against Olivet, Deters carried a perfect game
through seven innings and went on to pick up a complete-game nine-inning
victory as the Knights recorded an 11-2 victory.
Over the course of Calvin career, Deters was 25-6 on the mound with a 2.42
earned run average. He also struck out 295 batters in his career while giving
up just 45 walks. In addition, he logged 252.1 innings, recorded 43
appearances, 33 pitching starts, 18 complete games and seven shutout
victories.
He is the Calvin career leader in pitching victories, earned run average,
innings pitched, appearances and strikeouts. His records are magnified by the
fact that he missed the bulk of the 2003 season with an injury.
Earlier this month, Deters was named the MIAA's Pitcher of the Year and
landed a spot on the All-MIAA first team for the third time in the last four
years.
Deters is expected to be selected in the upcoming Major League Baseball draft
scheduled for June 7 and 8. He was graduated this past Saturday from Calvin
with a degree in criminal justice.
