MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
NAPERVILLE, IL * Another night of competition brought more NCAA III provisional and automatic qualifying performances for the Calvin men's and women's track and field teams at the Dr. Keeler Invitational hosted by North Central College Friday night.
The bulk of Calvin's standout performances came from the women's team with its 4x400 meter relay team of freshman Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids HS), seniors Sue Abbring (Highland, IN) and Laura Hamilton (Downers Grove, IL) and sophomore Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS) clocking in with a first place and NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 3:46.14. The time is the fastest in NCAA III women's track and field team this spring.
Abbring also sizzled in the 400 meters, clocking in with a first place and NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 55.80. Her time is currently second on the NCAA III qualifying list. Abbring was one of four Calvin runners in the open 400 with Wittingen taking sixth with an NCAA III provisional qualifying and career-best time of 57.36 while Winkle was ninth with a time of 57.89 that just missed a provisional cut. Sophomore Katie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also clocked a sub-minute quarter as she took 14th with a time of 59.36.
In the hurdles, Calvin also produced qualifying efforts as Hamilton took second in the 400 meter hurdles with a season-best and strong NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 1:01.95. Her time is currently second on the NCAA III qualifying list and is just five-hundreths of a second off an automatic qualifying time. In the 100 meter hurdles, Wittingen had a provisional qualifying effort of 14.85 that was good for eighth place.
Calvin's 4x100 meter relay team of Hamilton, Abbring, Wittingen and Winkle took second with a season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 48.12.
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, sophomore Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE) took fourth with a season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 11:03.6.
In the 800 meters, junior Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 2:15.49.
In the jumps, sophomore Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA) continued her strong sophomore campaign with a career-best mark of 17-11 � that was good for fifth place and just a few inches away from a provisional qualifying mark. Vogel also took fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 36-8 1/2.
In the high jump, sophomore Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids Christian HS) took third with a height of 5-4 �.
In the throws, senior Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Megann VanderVliet (Oakville, ON) continued to throw consistently at a high level as Nanninga took second in the shot put (45-9 �) with VanderVliet third at 45-1 �. Both marks were NCAA III provisional qualifying marks although both individuals have thrown further this year with Nanninga currently ranked second (46-11 �) and VanderVliet (46-1 �) fourth on the NCAA III qualifying list.
VanderVliet also added a fourth place throw of 130-3 in the discus. She is currently ninth on the NCAA III list in the discus with a throw of 142-9 set earlier this year.
On the men's side, Calvin's efforts were headlined by the fabulous distance duo of sophomore Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM) and senior Kris Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) as Finnegan took third in the 5,000 meters with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 14:30.96 while Koster was sixth with a provisional qualifying time of 14:33.62. Both times are strong NCAA III provisional qualifying marks.
Calvin's middle-distance tandem of senior Jeff Engbers (Whitinsville, MA) and sophomore Todd Schuster (Denver, CO) also had good weekends as Engbers took 10th in the 1500 meters with a season-best time and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 3:54.04 while Schuster was 15th in the 800 meters with a career-best time and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 1:53.49.
In the long jump, sophomore Josh Meckes (Bay City) took fifth with a jump of 22-9 while junior Tim Zwiers (Pella, IA) was seventh in the triple jump (45-5).
In addition, Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of senior Reuben Sportel (South Christian HS), freshman Jared Cok (Bozeman, MT), junior Brian VanDyken (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Joel Baker (Kalamazoo Christian HS) clocked a season-best time of 3:18.21 that was good for 10th place and just a second away from an NCAA III provisional qualifying mark.
A group of Calvin athletes will return to North Central next week for one more last-chance meet.
