CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MAY 10, 2005

ALL-MIAA TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS ANNOUNCED

The All-MIAA men's and women's track and field teams have been announced
and several Calvin athletes have been so honored.

On the men's side, Calvin has placed eight individuals on the All-MIAA team
headlined by the brother tandem of junior Nate Meckes (Bay City/Westland
Lutheran HS) and sophomore Josh Meckes (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS).
Nate Meckes is making his third appearance on the All-MIAA track and field team
while younger brother Josh is making his second straight appearance.

Also making his second straight appearance on the All-MIAA team from Calvin is
junior Tim Zwiers (Pella, IA/Pella Christian HS). Making their first
appearance on the All-MIAA men's team from Calvin are seniors Aaron Iverson
(Radnor, OH/Buckeye Valley HS), Reuben Sportel (Grand Rapids/South Christian
HS) and Kris Koster (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), sophomore Tim
Finnegan (Los Alomos, NM/Home Schooled), and freshman Dan Mackay (Whitinsville,
MA/Whitinsville Christian HS).

Calvin also swept both MVP honors on the men's side as Nate Meckes was named
the league's Most Outstanding Field Event Performer for the second time in
his career while Sportel was named the league's Most Outstanding runner. At
the MIAA Championships last week at Hope, Meckes captured the shot put and
discus with MIAA record efforts while also placing fourth in the javelin.
Sportel won the 110 high hurdles and 400 meter hurdles, clocking a personal
best time of 54.80 in the 400 meter hurdles.

On the women's side, 14 of the 20 individuals on the All-MIAA team are from
Calvin. Leading the list are seniors Laura Hamilton (Downer Grove, IL/Timothy
Christian HS) and Sue Abbring (Highland, IN/Illiana Christian HS) who were both
named to the All-MIAA team for the fourth straight year. The two seniors are
two of 23 individuals in MIAA women's track and field history to be named to
the All-MIAA four straight years. Of the 23 athletes, 14 are from Calvin. At
the MIAA Championships last week, Hamilton captured the 400 meter hurdles for
the fourth straight year, becoming just the second individual in MIAA women's
track and field history to do so in that event. Holly Breuker-Shoemaker, a
1996 graduate of Calvin is the only other individual to win the 400 meter
hurdles four straight years.

Abbring was a four-year winner in two events as she repeated as league
champion in both the 100 and 200 meters last week for the fourth straight year.
She is the only individual in MIAA women's track and field history to win
league titles four straight years in two events. She is also the only
individual to win the 100 meters four straight years and the 200 meters the
same.

Receiving All-MIAA honors for the third straight year from Calvin are juniors
Kim Vanderzee (Shoreline, WA/Shorewood HS) and Missy Smith (Grand Rapids/Grand
Rapids Christian HS). Receiving the honor for the second time from Calvin are
senior Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), juniors Camille
Medema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Christine Hendricks
(Cincinnati, OH/Turpin HS) and sophomore Katie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids/Grand
Rapids Christian HS). Named to the All-MIAA team from Calvin for the first
time are sophomores Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS),
Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA/Unity Christian HS), Lydia Singer (Wilmington,
DE/Hillcrest Academy) and Megann VanderVliet (Oakville, ON/Trafalgar HS) and
freshman Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids/East Grand Rapids HS).

Calvin also swept both MIAA MVP awards as Abbring was named the MIAA's Most
Valuable Runner for the second straight year while Hendricks was named the
MIAA's Most Outstanding Field Event Performer. In addition to winning the
100 and 200 meters at the league championships, Abbring also anchored
Calvin's first place 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams. Over the course
of her Calvin career, Abbring was never in a race in an MIAA dual meet or
conference meet where she or her relay team was defeated. Hendricks also
scored for Calvin in several events last week, winning the javelin, taking
third in the high jump and long jump as well as placing third in the 100 meter
hurdles.

CALVIN TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS RANKED HIGH IN M-F ATHLETIC POWER RANKINGS

The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams are once again ranked
highly in the latest set of NCAA Division III power rankings. Sponsored by the

MF Athletic Company, the power rankings have been released since 1999 and
reflect the strength of a track and field team in head-to-head dual meet
competition.

The power rankings are tabulated by a cumulative point system. To submit a
team for ranking, a school must submit two individuals in each event that is
used in a head-to-head dual meet. In submitting an entry, the best time or
performance of the year for the individual is submitted. An individual may not
be listed in more than three individual events in the final weekly team entry.

In the latest Division III power rankings, the Calvin women's track and field
team is ranked second nationally with a cumulative score of 198.32 with
Wisconsin-Oshkosh leading the rankings with a score of 203.09.

In the men's rankings, Calvin is ranked eighth with a cumulative team score of

200.01. Willamette University (OR) is the top-ranked team with a score of
213.98.

At the conclusion of the season, the team with the highest rankings in both
the men's and women's polls will receive trophies from the MF Athletic
Company.
The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh was the recent winner for the women's
indoor season while the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse was the winner for
the men's indoor season.

Over the last three years, the Calvin women have finished second in the final

power rankings. In 2004, Calvin finished second with a cumulative team score
of 214.75, trailing only Wisconsin-Oshkosh which accumulated a score of 218.50.
In 2003, Calvin finished with a cumulative team score of 207.81, 10 points
behind first place Williams (MA) College. In 2002, the Calvin women posted a
season-ending final score of 206.52, less than five points behind first place
Wisconsin-LaCrosse. The second place finishes are Calvin's best-ever finishes
in the power rankings.

Calvin's highest finish in the men's rankings came in 2001 when it posted a
final season score of 204.07 which was good for fourth place. In 2003, Calvin

finished 17th with a final cumulative score of 200.98. In 2004, Calvin
finished 24th with a final season score of 192.27.
