CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MAY 7, 2005
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD NOTES FROM THE MIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
In Friday's report, it was correctly noted that the Calvin women's track and
field team captured its 14th straight MIAA Field Day title. However, it was
not noted that the MIAA Field Day crown allowed Calvin to capture at least a
share of its 16th straight MIAA title. Calvin captured MIAA dual meet titles
in 1990 and 1991 but shared the final league title with Alma both years as the
Scots captured the MIAA Field Day both years.
The current streak of 16 straight MIAA titles by the Calvin women's track and
field team is the longest active MIAA women's championship streak and also
matches the longest championship streak in MIAA women's athletics history, set
by Calvin's women's cross country team from 1988-to-2003.
Calvin's league championship was its 20th overall in women's track and field -
more than any other MIAA school.
In addition, Calvin's winning total of 327 points is the third-highest point
total at an MIAA Field Day by a women's team. The record is 352 points by
Calvin's 2000 team with its 2001 team second with 350 points.
Another note that was overlooked was a new MIAA record established by Calvin
sophomore Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA) in the triple jump as Vogel won the
event with a mark of 36-10 1/4, breaking the previous record of 36- 1 1/2 set
by Hope's Kara VanAssen last spring.
On the men's side, Calvin captured at least a share of its 12th straight MIAA
championship - establishing the longest championship streak in MIAA men's track
and field history. In taking first place, Calvin captured its 19th straight
MIAA Field Day title. Calvin's current MIAA Championship streak began in 1994.
In 1993, Calvin won the MIAA Field day title but did not win a share of the
overall title as the Knights took third in the MIAA dual meet standings.
Calvin's league championship was its 30th overall in men's track and field
which ranks second among MIAA schools, trailing only the 32 championships won
the Britons of Albion.
BASEBALL
Although Calvin's season had concluded a day prior, the Knights solidified sole
possession of third place in the final MIAA standings on Saturday as Hope swept
a doubleheader at Olivet, leaving the Comets tied for fourth place with Albion
at 10-11 in the final league standings. An Olivet sweep on Saturday would have
given the Comets a share of third place with Calvin.
Hope's sweep allowed the Flying Dutchmen to remain alive in the MIAA title hunt
as they trail league-leading Adrian by just percentage points. Hope (15-6) has
completed its MIAA schedule and must wait for Adrian (13-5) to make up a
three-game series at Tri-State on Monday and Tuesday. Adrian can clinch a
share of the league title and the MIAA's automatic bid to the NCAA III
Tournament with two victories over Tri-State as the Bulldogs hold the
tie-breaker edge over Hope, having won two of three games with the Flying
Dutchmen this year. A sweep of Adrian by Tri-State however would give Hope the
outright league crown and the MIAA's NCAA III Tournament bid.

Hope 15-6
