ALBION- Jim Deters made his final start for the maroon and gold one to
remember. The senior right hander from Kalamazoo Christian High School
pitched the Knights to a 5-2 victory over Albion College Thursday
afternoon. Deters, who came into the game ranked third nationally in
strikeouts per nine innings in NCAA III with 12.8 per game, pitched a
complete game, allowing only two earned runs on seven hits while
striking out eleven batters.
With the victory, Deters moves to 7-1 on the season and improves his
Calvin career record to 25-6 overall, a Calvin record, and 18-3 in the
MIAA. With his 18th league victory, Deters moves into sole possession
of first place in conference victories. His 295 career strikeouts are
first all time on the Calvin career list, and Thursday he passed former
teammate Mike Ott into first place for all-time innings pitched at
Calvin with 252 frames worked. Also, in allowing only two earned runs
Thursday, Deters claims first place in MIAA earned run average (ERA),
giving up less than 2.4 runs per game throughout his Calvin career.
The victory improves Calvin's record to 11-8 in the MIAA and 13-19 on
the season. Albion falls to 9-10 MIAA and 15-22 overall, now two games
back of Calvin, who is in third place behind Adrian and Hope
respectively.
Deters received all the runs he would need from his teammates in the
second inning. With one out, sophomore Nick Caudle (Calvin Christian)
doubled in junior Tyler Van Eps (Denver, CO), who had singled to lead
off the inning. Caudle scored on an RBI single by junior Kyle Snoeyink
(Calvin Christian) and after junior Kyle Hollemans' (East Kentwood)
infield single and a wild pitch, Snoeyink came home on an RBI single by
junior Mark Asma (Kalamazoo Christian).
Albion got on the board in the fourth off of Deters with a double and a
single, but Deters limited the damage to that.
In the top of the seventh inning, three walks and an error lead to
Calvin's fourth run, with Van Eps getting the RBI by the base on balls,
scoring Asma.
After Albion got with in two runs by scoring one in the bottom of the
seventh, the Knights extended their lead to three again by virtue of a
solo homerun by Asma to lead of the top of the ninth. It was Asma's
second long ball in as many games and his third on the season.
Notable performances for the Calvin offense included Asma, who had two
hits, two runs batted in, and two runs scored, Snoeyink, who collected
three hits with a run batted in and also a run scored, and Hollemans,
who had two hits. Also picking up hits on the day for the Knights were
junior Mark Tigchelaar, (GR Christian), Van Eps, and Caudle.
Calvin will finish of the season tomorrow with a doubleheader against
the Britons in Albion. The first game is scheduled to start at 1:00pm.

ALMA * Calvin split a pair of contests at the MIAA Tournament on Thursday at Alma College to advance to the loser's bracket final against Hope Friday at noon.
Calvin opened the tournament with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Hope Thursday morning. The Knights were held hitless through six and a third innings by starting pitcher Kelsey Guisbert but with one out, Calvin senior Abby Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) broke up the no-hit bid and end the contest with a mammoth walk-off home run to centerfield.
The victory over Hope snapped a six-game losing streak in MIAA Tournament play by the Knights. Sophomore Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID) was superb for Calvin in the pitching circle as she tossed a one-hit shutout, striking out seven Hope batters and walking just one. The only hit Spooner (7-1) allowed was a bunt single in the top of the first inning.
The victory advanced Calvin into the winner's bracket final Thursday evening against Alma where it came up short, falling 3-2. Calvin (24-12) battled the nationally-ranked Scots (28-8) on even terms for three innings as the game remained scoreless. With two outs in the top of the fourth however, Alma capitalized on two Calvin errors and three hits, scoring three unearned runs.
Calvin answered back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, using a two-out RBI single from Angie Sietsema (Grandville HS) and a bases-loaded walk from senior Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont HS) to close to within one. Alma senior pitcher Melissa Tavidian ended the threat however by striking out Calvin sophomore Andrea Wagner (Unity Christian HS) with the bases full. Wagner battled Tavidian throughout the at bat, fouling off six straight pitches with two strikes before finally striking out on an inside fast ball.
Tavidian (13-5) then retired the Calvin side in the seventh to close out the win.
Senior Kara VanKooten (11-7) took the loss for Calvin despite allowing only three hits. Calvin picked up two hits against Tavidian who carried a perfect game through four innings and a no-hit bid through 5.2 innings.
Alma advances to Friday's championship game at 2:00 where it will face the Calvin/Hope winner.

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
(Written by Annalise VenHuizen)
After day one of the MIAA Championship Track and Field Meet, the Calvin men stand in first place with 65 points.
A one-two-three finish in the 10,000 meter run gave the Knights a boost past Hope, who led after the four field events that took place this afternoon. Sophomore Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM) was the MIAA Champion in the 10,000 meters, followed by sophomore Paul Rollet (Chatham, IL) in second and sophomore Bill Reynolds (Newtown Square, PA) in third. "It went the way I thought it would. The men ran hard last week at Hillsdale, and today we just wanted an even pace and control. They did what they had to do," said Coach Al Hoekstra.
Calvin also had a good showing in the field events. In the long jump, sophomore Josh Meckes (Bay City/Lutheran Westland High) took first, and freshman Luke Allison (Lakeville, MN) took third place. "I was expecting Josh to win, but it wasn't a sure thing. He is getting close to qualifying for Nationals," said Coach Kim. Sophomore Jesse Singer (Darlington, WI) represented in the pole vault, taking 6th place.
The throwing events were another place of strength. Junior Nate Meckes (Bay City/ Lutheran Westland High) captured the MIAA Champion title and broke the league record in shot put with a throw of 16.68 meters. Josh Meckes placed third in the event. Nate Meckes also placed 4th in the javelin throw. Coach Norm Zylstra says Meckes' success is due to resting now towards the end of the season and better competition.
The men also advanced many runners from prelims to finals, which will take place tomorrow. Freshman Kelby McClelland (Mercer, PA) and senior Reuben Sportel (Caledonia/South Christian) advanced in both the 110 meter hurdles and 400 meter hurdles. Freshman Joel Baker (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian), junior Brian VanDyken (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian), and freshman Jared Cok (Bozeman, MT) qualified for the 400 meter finals. Baker and VanDyken also will compete in the 200 meter finals tomorrow. In the 800 meters, sophomore Todd Schuster (Denver, CO), freshman Brian Wilmarth (Chatham, IL), and senior Ben Dyke (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) advanced to tomorrow's finals.
