CALVIN SPORTS REPORT (PART TWO) FOR MARCH 19, 2005
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
HOLLAND * Calvin senior Peter Boumgarden nearly advanced to the consolation finals of the 100 freestyle on the final day of competition at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships but came up just short as he was edged in a swim-off for the 16th and final spot.
Boumgarden had finished tied for 16th place in the morning prelims with a time of 46.48 and was then forced to compete in a swim-off with Denison's Lowell Byers to see who would advance to the consolation finals. A native of Naperville, Illinois, Boumgarden lowered his time, swimming 46.27 in the swim-off but Byers also lowered his time, swimming 46.11 to advance to the consolation final.
The swim-off completed Boumgarden's collegiate career. On Friday night, Boumgarden took seventh in the 100 butterfly to earn All-America honors in the event for a fourth straight year. It also earned Calvin 12 points as the Knights finished tied for 41st in the final team standings.
Kenyon College of Ohio captured the national title for the 26th straight year, posting a total of 556.5 points, finishing more than 100 points ahead of runner-up Emory University.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
SALEM, VA * Saturday's national title went to UW-Stevens Point which repeated as national champion with a 73-49 victory over the University of Rochester in the national championship game. The game was tied at 25 late in the first half with Stevens Point leading 29-25 at halftime. The Pointers (29-3) would outscore Rochester 45-24 in the second half, hitting 6 of 11 from three-point range.
In repeating as national champions, UW-Stevens Point joined North Park and UW-Platteville as the only NCAA III institutions to repeat as national champions in men's basketball.
UW-Stevens Point placed three players on the all-tournament team, becoming just the fourth schools in the 31-year history of the NCAA III Men's Final Four to do so. Stevens Point senior Jason Kalsow was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player and was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Nick Bennett and Eric Krull. Calvin junior Joel Hoekstra of Unity Christian High School was also named to the all-tournament team as was Rochester senior Seth Hauben.
On the women's side, Millikin University defeated Randolph-Macon 70-50 in the national championship game Saturday afternoon in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Millikin ended Calvin's season a week ago in the national quarterfinals, defeating the Knights 63-56 at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
BASEBALL
FORT MYERS, FL * Calvin closed out its spring trip with another double-digit loss, falling 13-1 to Denison University Saturday morning.
Calvin was outhit 17-5 by the Big Red. Denison broke open a 4-1 game with three runs in the fifth and six runs in the sixth.
Calvin senior Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian HS) took the loss to fall to 1-1 on the year. Deters went six innings, striking out seven and walking one with junior Joel Bont (Calvin Christian HS) tossing one inning of relief.
Calvin sophomore Mark Asma (Kalamazoo Christian HS) picked up two of Calvin's five hits.
Calvin is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday when it plays host to Aquinas at 4:00 p.m.
SOFTBALL
ORLANDO * The Calvin softball team closed out its spring trip with three victories on Friday, defeating Massachusetts College 18-0, Benedictine University 6-1 and Anderson University 8-0.
The Knights completed their trip in Florida with a 6-1 record.
In the Friday victories, Calvin received pitching victories from seniors Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont HS), Kara VanKooten (Anchorage, AK) and sophomore Ruth Anna Spooner (Idaho Falls, ID).
Junior Laurel Sands also highlighted the afternoon with a grand-slam home run.
A further report on the spring trip will be sent out either Sunday night or Monday when the full week of statistics has been accumulated.
The Knights are scheduled to host Cornerstone University on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
MEN'S TENNIS
HILTON HEAD, SC * The men's tennis team concluded its spring trip with 9-0 victories over St. Scholastica College and Nebraska Wesleyan University.
The Knights are now 7-1 on the year and have won seven straight matches. Calvin will swing back into action on March 30 when it plays host to Grand Valley State University.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
MEMPHIS, TN * The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams posted strong performances at the Rhodes College Invitational on Saturday as the women took first place 159 points, 53 points ahead of the University of Memphis which took second. On the men's side, Calvin took second with 142.5 points, just 11.5 points behind first place Southeast Missouri State.
In the women's competition, Calvin took first place in five events. Leading the way was senior Sue Abbring (Highland, IN) who captured the 200 meters with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 25.26 while also taking first place in the 400 meters with a time of 58.07.
Senior Laura Hamilton (Downers Grove, IL) also came up with a first place and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 1:03.37 in the 400 meter hurdles.
Other victories included junior Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 800 meters (2:19.93) and junior Missy Smith (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the pole vault (11-0 ¼).
In addition, junior Kim Vanderzee (Shoreline, WA) took second in the high jump with an NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 5-6.
On the men's side, junior Nate Meckes (Bay City) continued his fast start to the season as he took first place in the shot and discus with strong NCAA III provisional qualifying marks. Meckes posted a winning throw of 54-7 ¼ in the shot put and then came back with a winning toss of 162-1 in the discus.
In the triple jump, Calvin went 1-2 with freshman Luke Allison winning with a mark of 43-8 ¾ while junior Tim Zwiers (Pella, IA) was second at 43-0 ¼.
Calvin also went 1-2 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and 1-2-3 in the 1,500 meters. In the steeplechase, junior Harrison Jorritsma (Lakeville, MN) won with a time of 9:40.28 with senior Aaron Iverson (Radnor, OH) close behind in second with a time of 9:42.40.
In the 1,500 meters, senior Jeff Engbers (Whitinsville, MA) won in 3:59.61 followed by senior Kris Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in second (3:59.62) and junior Tyler Zwagerman (Holland Christian HS) in third (4:02.29).
Senior Reuben Sportel (South Christian HS) also had a strong day, taking second in the 110 high hurdles (15.53) and the 400 meter hurdles (56.68).
Both Calvin track and field teams are scheduled to return to action on April 2 when they host the Grand Rapids Open at 1:00 p.m. at the Calvin track and field complex.
