CALVIN SPORTS REPORT for March 5, 2005 (Part One)

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
(Written by Annalise Venhuizen '08)

Winning a second round game of the NCAA III Championships DePauw
University (ranked 12th), Calvin (24-4) will advance to Sweet Sixteen play next
Friday night (time and place TBD). 22nd ranked Calvin last saw Sweet Sixteen
play in the 1999-2000 season, and this is the 3rd time they will do so in
school history.

Calvin will meet fellow MIAA team, Albion (25-4), who defeated Denison
63-44 in second round play. This will be the fourth meeting between the teams
this season, with Calvin sweeping previous meetings 3-0. It also marks the
first time in conference history that MIAA teams went head to head in Sweet
Sixteen play. Calvin has never advanced in the tournament beyond Sweet Sixteen
play.

With the win, Calvin also meets a school record for wins, as the
1998-1999 team was 24-6.

Calvin started the game with an amazing 13-0 run. Starting forward
sophomore Lisa Winkle (Grand Rapids/South Christian) started off the scoring
for Calvin, and starters senior Lesa Holleman (Chandler, MN/SW Minnesota
Christian), senior Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian), senior
Rita Ouwinga (Marion/NM McBain Christian), and senior Kristen McDonald (Grand
Rapids/West Catholic) also scored in the run. Winkle also scored the last two
of the 13 points.

Senior Amy Argetsinger would put DePauw on the board with a made
jumper. Each team scored 30 points a piece the rest of the half, though Calvin
would lead throughout the half. Calvin's largest lead came by a lay-up by
Nannninga with 7:23 on the clock.

With help from freshmen Lindsey Peuler (Grandville/Grandville
Christian) who had 6 first-half points and Charis Larson (Grand Rapids/Grand
Rapids Christian) who had 5, Calvin closed out the half with a 43-30 lead.

However, within the first nine minutes of the second half, the Tigers
managed to narrow that lead down to four points, when the score was 52-48. In
those nine minutes, DePauw outscored Calvin 18-9, with seven of Calvin's nine
points coming from the hands of McDonald.

DePauw would go on to lead 59-58 when Gretchen Haehl had a jumper.
Kristen McDonald answered with a three to put Calvin up 2, but Argetsinger
would tie the game at 61 with a jumper of her own with 6:15 left to play.

However, Calvin went on a 11-2 run to close out the game. Lisa Winkle
had eight of those points and Nanninga had the other three. Calvin's run in
the final 6 minutes gave them a 72-63 victory over DePauw (23-6).

About weathering DePauw's comeback, Calvin Coach John Ross said,
"We just had to play hard and pick up the defensive intensity and our
guards needed to stop the penetration, and we stepped up our defense overall.
That was huge."

Coach Ross also said, "We came ready to play today. We were
disappointed with our effort Wednesday night against Franklin. We knew we had
to play better and we did. I think our biggest strength today was our
rebounding."

On DePauw's side, Sarah Zondor lead her team with 16 points, followed
by Argetsinger, who had 13.

Lisa Winkle had 22 points, 14 rebounds, and 8 blocks, making her 12th
double-double. McDonald followed with 19 points and 9 assists, and Nanninga
had 9 points and 10 rebounds.

McDonald attributes Calvin's wins in the last five games to their
"inside-outside game". "One of the main reasons we're winning
tournament games is because both ends are working," she said.
