CALVIN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TO HOST NCAA III TOURNAMENT FIRST ROUND GAME
The Calvin women's basketball team will open NCAA III Tourmanent play at home
Wednesday night when it hosts the Grizzlies of Franklin College.
The winner of the Calvin/Franklin matchup will travel to DePauw University
(23-5) for a second round game Saturday afternoon.
Calvin (22-4) advanced to the NCAA III Tournament by winning the MIAA
Tournament title this past week. Franklin (23-5) advanced to the NCAA III
Tournament by winning the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament
crown on Saturday.
Wednesday's first round game between Calvin and Franklin will be the first
between the two teams in NCAA III Tournament play and just the second-ever
meeting with Calvin winning the first meeting 65-50 during the 1971-72 season.
Calvin will be making its ninth trip to the NCAA III Tournament and its first
since the 1999-2000 season. The Knights are 8-8 in NCAA III Tournament play.
CALVIN MEN TO TRAVEL TO FAMILIAR FOE THURSDAY NIGHT
The Calvin men's basketball team will face a familiar foe in the first round of
the NCAA III Tournament as the Knights (22-6) will travel to non-conference
rival Wheaton College of Illinois (20-5) Thursday night.
Thursday's game will mark the second meeting of the year between the two teams
as Wheaton claimed a 91-87 overtime victory over the Knights back on December
three at Wheaton. It will also mark the 46th meeting overall between the two
schools in a series that dates back to the 1949-50 season and sees Wheaton
holding a 24-21 series lead. It will also mark the first-ever meeting between
the two teams in NCAA III Tournament play.
Calvin will be making its 15th trip to the NCAA III Tournament and holds a
23-15 record in NCAA III Tournament play.
Both teams finished in second place in their respective conferences this year
with Calvin taking second in the MIAA and Wheaton doing the same in the
Collegiate Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). Calvin advanced to the
NCAA III Tournament by winning the MIAA Tournament crown Saturday night.
Wheaton received an at-large bid to the NCAA III Tournament.
The winner of the Calvin/Wheaton contest will travel to Aurora University of
Illinois (22-4) for a second round game Saturday night.
