CALVIN MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM UNDEFEATED WHEN RANKED #1
Tales of Calvin's demise as a number-one ranked team in men's basketball
have been greatly exaggerated.
Tonight's Calvin-Hope men's basketball game will mark the final regular
season meeting between the two schools at the venerable Holland Civic Center.
This week, a handful of published reports recapping memorable Calvin-Hope games
at the Holland Civic Center listed the February 15, 1992 meeting as a 77-75
Hope victory over number-one ranked Calvin. In fact, it was Calvin that won
that contest 77-75 at the Holland Civic Center over eight-ranked Hope. Chris
Knoester led Calvin in the victory with 22 points with Steve Honderd close
behind with 18. Hope was led in defeat by Wade Gugino who powered in 29 points
and grabbed nine rebounds.
Calvin had earned the number-one ranking in the (now defunct) NCAA Division
III Top-25 poll a week-and-a-half prior on February 5. Calvin would win later
that night (Feb. 5) against Olivet and would continue all the way to winning
its first national title. As the number-one ranked team in the country, Calvin
posted a 13-0 record in 1992. Calvin would finish the 1991-92 season 31-1
overall with its only defeat of the year coming at North Park College (IL) on
January 7, with the Knights falling to the Vikings 87-71.
Calvin would not receive a number-one ranking again until the 1999-2000 season
when the Knights picked up the top spot in the D3hoops.com Top-25 poll a few
days before its second round NCAA III Tournament game at home against Franklin
College (IN). Calvin would edge Franklin in a thriller 92-90 in overtime and
would continue on to win its next four games as well as its second-ever
national championship.
Combined, when ranked number-one, the Calvin men's basketball team has
posted an 18-0 won-loss record.
Calvin is currently ranked 15th in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll.
Tonight's game at the Holland Civic Center is scheduled to begin at 8:00
p.m.
