CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR JANUARY 12, 2005

MEN'S BASKETBALL
(Written by Abby Zylstra)

Calvin defeated Kalamazoo, 89-56, Wednesday night, at the Calvin
Fieldhouse.

Kalamazoo started strong with the tip-off and first four points of the
game. Calvin was slow to warm up but soon had a 14-3 run including a
big three-pointer from junior Andy Draayer [Denver, CO/Denver Christian]
and five consecutive points from senior Dan Aultman [Ludington/Mason
County Central]. The late first half run put Calvin up by 12 at half-time,
41-29. The Knights continued to stretch their lead in the second half, using a
16-2 run, including five straight points from senior Brad Sall
[Hudsonville/Unity Christian] as Calvin finished with a 33-point margin of
victory.

"We played pretty hard defensively," said head coach Kevin Vande Streek.
"I thought we created a number of scoring opportunities with our defense. We
also received a strong contribution from our bench and Brad Sall was the
spark."

Aultman led the team offensively with a game-high 22 points and three
blocks; Draayer with 13 points, and senior Ricky Shilts
[Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Central] and sophomore Kyle Snoeyink
[Grandville/Calvin Christian] each contributed nine. Senior Josh
Vriesman [Denver, CO/Denver Christian] dished out four assists. Sall
brought down a game and career-high 10 rebounds and a game-high three steals
and
sophomore Josh Meckes [Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran] had eight
rebounds and two steals.

Ryan Konwinski led the Hornets with 12 points, Damon Krohn had eight
points. Kyle Konwinski and Roger Garfield both brought down five
rebounds.

The Knights (10-4 overall, 2-1 MIAA) shot 77% from the free throw line (20 of
26) and out-rebounded the Hornets 50-28 with the Knights scoring 19
second-chance points while Kalamazoo had just six second-chance points. Calvin
finished the game with a 44.9 percent field goal clip (31 of 69) while holding
the visiting Hornets (5-8 overall, 1-2 MIAA) to 34.5 percent field goal
