CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR JANUARY 4, 2005

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

A record-breaking performance from senior point guard Kristen McDonald allowed
Calvin to thwart an upset bid by visiting Tri-State Tuesday night at the Calvin
Fieldhouse as the Knights recorded an 84-73 conference victory. Calvin now has
a win streak of seven games.

Tuesday's contest was much closer than the final score might indicate as the
visiting Thunder (4-8, 1-2 MIAA) used full-court pressure defense and an
aggressive three-point attack to build a 34-33 halftime lead.

Calvin (9-2 overall, 3-1 MIAA) opened the second half with an 11-1 scoring run
to take a 44-35 lead with 16:28 remaining. Tri-State would battle back to tie
the game on two separate occasions in the second half, using a three-pointer
from Nikki Bergman with 12:55 left to tie the score at 48 and then knotting the
score at 67 on a layup by Mindy Tilford with 4:38 left.

Calvin then took the lead for good on a putback in traffic by senior Rita
Ouwinga at the 3:28 mark. Sophomore Lisa Winkle followed with a layup and
McDonald connected on her fifth three-pointer of the evening to give the
Knights a 74-69 edge with 2:25 remaining. Tri-State would get no closer than
five points the rest of the way as Calvin connected in eight free throw
attempts in the final two minutes of play to seal the win.

McDonald finished with 19 points and a Calvin single-game record 12 assists
against just six turnovers in 35 minutes of action against Tri-State's
swarming full-court press. McDonald's assist effort broke the previous
record of 11 assists set by Amy Bierling in 1984. It also marked McDonald's
second double-double effort of the season.

Lisa Winkle also recorded her seventh career double-double in the win as she
collected 25 points on 10 of 13 shooting along with 14 rebounds, four blocked
shots and one assist. Senior Lisa Nanninga was also in double-figures for
Calvin with 15 points and nine rebounds while freshmen Erica Boonstra and
Charis Larson chipped in with five points apiece off the bench. Larson played
arguably her finest game of her young collegiate career as she also recorded
four assists, three rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot.

Tri-State was led in defeat by Bergman's 15-point effort while Kamilla
Ruffer had 14 points and Tilford 11 points. Kelly Stechschulte was the top
rebounder for the Thunder with eight boards.

Calvin finished with a 52-44 rebounding edge. The Knights did commit 27
turnovers but also collected 28 assists. Calvin also shot 47 percent overall
including 53 percent in the second half. In addition, Calvin limited Tri-State
to 30.7 percent field goal shooting including just 26 percent in the second
half. In the opening 20 minutes, Tri-State was 8 of 20 from three-point range
but connected on just 3 of 17 in the second half for an overall three-point
clip of 29.7 percent.

Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it journeys to St. Mary's for a
7:30 p.m. conference game. Calvin will also host Kalamazoo Saturday night at
7:30 p.m. conference game.
