CALVIN SPORTS REPORT (Part One) FOR DECEMBER 4, 2004

MEN'S BASKETBALL

WHEATON, IL - This time overtime was a bit more kind to the Calvin College
Knights. Using a pull-up jumper from junior guard Kyle Trewhella with just 4.6
seconds left in overtime, Calvin (5-3) upset 21st-ranked Carthage College (3-2)
83-82 in overtime Saturday afternoon on the second day of competition at the
CCIW/MIAA Classic hosted by Wheaton College.

Less than 24 hours before on the same floor, Calvin had suffered a
heart-breaking 91-87 overtime defeat to 13th-ranked Wheaton College as it let a
double-digit lead in the second half disappear.

Calvin nearly did the same against Carthage as it led by 15 points in the
first half, by 10 early in the second half and by nine at 62-53 with just 7:52
left in regulation. The Redmen of Carthage fought back with an 11-2 run over
the next three minutes, taking a lead on a pair of free throws from Keena
Johnson with 4:40 left on the clock.

The lead would then change hands twice with Carthage going up 71-69 on a
Johnson layup with 2:07 remaining. Neither team would score until Calvin
senior Dan Aultman converted a jumper in the lane with 14 seconds remaining to
knot the score at 71. Johnson would then miss a driving layup in the closing
seconds, sending the game into overtime.

In overtime, Trewhella would can a pair of three-pointers, the first putting
Calvin up 74-71 and the second giving the Knights a 79-77 lead with 2:48
remaining. Another layup by Johnson would tie the game at 79 with 1:03 left on
the clock but the Knights would answer with a baseline jumper by Aultman to
take an 81-79 lead with 26 ticks left.

On the ensuing possession, Calvin's defense clogged the lane, forcing
Carthage to kick the ball outside but Johnson responded again, drilling a deep
three-pointer with a hand in his face to put the Redmen up 82-81 with 10
seconds remaining.

After a timeout, Calvin senior point guard Ricky Shilts would bring the ball
up the floor and was able to penetrate the lane and then kick the ball over to
Shilts who swished in a shot from 15 feet away. Carthage quickly pushed the
ball up floor but a three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark, allowing the
Knights to pull out the one-point win.

The victory was Calvin's first against a nationally-ranked opponent this
year as the Knights had previously dropped an 88-87 decision to #17 (NAIA D2)
Cornerstone last Saturday and then Friday night's narrow defeat to Wheaton.

Johnson led all scorers with 28 points on 7 of 11 shooting including a 13 of
17 performance at the free throw line.

Kevin Menard also reached double-digits in scoring for Carthage with 20 points
along with eight rebounds.

Calvin was paced by Aultman's 20-point, 7-rebound effort. Junior Joel
Hoekstra was next on the scoring list for the Knights with 14 points while
Trewhella had 12 points and five boards. Calvin's top rebounder was
sophomore Josh Meckes who ripped down a game-high 11 caroms while also dishing
out three assists.

Calvin held a 39-34 rebounding advantage and shot 53 percent overall including
50 percent (9 of 18) from three-point range. Carthage shot just 37.7 percent
overall but stayed in the game behind free throw shooting as its converted 28
of 36 attempts (.778) while Calvin went to the line just 12 times and converted
10 for an 83 percent clip.

Calvin returns to the Chicago area Wednesday night when it travels to Trinity
Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois for a 7:30 p.m. (CT) contest.

KENOSHA, WI -- After suffering a disappointing 60-50 loss to Hope this past
Wednesday, the Calvin Knights rebounded with back to back wins at the CCIW/MIAA
Classic hosted at Carthage College this weekend.

On Friday night, Calvin recorded a come-from-behind 51-48 victory over
Wheaton. On Saturday, the Knights completed the weekend sweep by defeating
Carthage 76-67.

Scoring for both Carthage and Calvin was fairly even in the first half, until
Calvin pulled away from a 32-32 tie in the last four minutes of the half.
Triggered by a 3-point play by senior Lesa Holleman (SW Minnesota Christian)
and a three-pointer by freshman Lindsey Peuler (Grandville), the Knights
out-scored the Lady Reds 12-7 in the last three minutes, to end the half up 5
points, 44-39.

By the end of the half, sophomore Lisa Winkle (South Christian) already had 15
points, 3 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

Calvin started the second half on the right foot, with senior Kristen McDonald
(West Catholic) scoring from the three-point line, bringing the lead to 47-39.
The Lady Reds would get within six off two free-throws by Freshman Keeley
Monckton, but that would be the closest Carthage would get to catching the
Knights.

Calvin's largest lead came at the 8:28 mark, when Calvin led by 14 points,
64-50. Calvin maintained the lead and ended the game leading by nine, 76-67.

Leading scorers for Calvin were Lisa Winkle with 22 points, followed by

had 14, and freshman Lisa Gartelos had 13.

The Knights, now 4-2 on the season, will face Alma College at the Calvin
Fieldhouse on Wednesday, Dec. 8 in an MIAA contest scheduled to begin at 7:30
p.m.
