WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Story written by Annalise VenHuizen ('08)

KENOSHA, WI -- In the first game of the MIAA/CCIW Women's Classic hosted by
Carthage College, the Calvin Knights (3-2) defeated non-conference rival, the
Wheaton Thunder, but not without a fight.

The Knights were down 17 points at 24-7 in the first half, but managed to
close the gap to 9 with a 13-5 run, ending the half 29-20, with Wheaton still
on top.

The Knights scored the first four points of the second half, getting them back
in the game, but they would not have a lead until they rose above the Thunder
43-42, with less than seven minutes of regulation play left. Wheaton (4-1)
attempted to battle back in the last minutes, but Calvin senior guard Kristen
McDonald (West Catholic) would put the Knights out of reach with four made free
throws in the last minute of the game, giving Calvin a 51-48 win.

Calvin's win was due to excellent play on both sides of the court.
Defensively, the Knights held Wheaton to a 34 percent field-goal average in the
second half. On offense, Calvin's second half effort outscored Wheaton's
31-19.

The leading scorer for Calvin was McDonald with 10 points, being 8 for 10 at
the free throw line. Following were sophomore Lisa Winkle (South Christian)
with nine points, and senior Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian) and
freshmen Lindsey Peuler (Grandville) and Charis Larson (Grand Rapids Christian)
adding seven points apiece. Senior Lesa Holleman (SW Minnesota Christian)
added six rebounds and four assists, and Winkle contributed seven rebounds.

Wheaton's Sara Arnold had a game-high 13 points as the top scorer for the
Thunder.

The Knights return to action in Kenosha, Saturday at 4:00 pm EST, playing
against the host, Carthage College.

WHEATON, IL -- In overtime, Wheaton defeated Calvin, 91-87, Friday night at
the
CCIW/MIAA Classic at Wheaton's King Arena

The Knights (4-3) were up by five at halftime, but they were outscored
and out-rebounded by the Thunder (5-0) in the second half. With 12:40
left in the game, the Knights' 11-point lead quickly slipped away on a
Thunder 12-point run in a span of a minute-and-a-half to take a 51-50
point lead.

Wheaton started the game with a lay-up off the tip. The Knights fought
back, and the Thunder controlled the lead until the Knights pulled away
of junior Andy Draayer's [Denver, Colo.] second three of the game,
20-17. The Thunder attempted a comeback, but Draayer answered with
another three-point basket. The Knights were up 30-21, but the Thunder
cut the lead to three before half. Junior Kyle Trewhella [Rockford] got
fouled on the Knight's last play of the half, and he put down two of his
three free-throws, giving Calvin a five point lead at the half, 34-29.

The Knights took a quick 41-31 lead at the start of the second half.
The Knights were up by 11 in the second half when the Thunder scored 12
points in 90 seconds. The Thunder scored a quick three-pointer, a steal
and another basket, and another steal drew an intentional foul from
senior Ricky Shilts [Kalamazoo], and Wheaton made both free throws.
The Knights and the Thunder alternated leads until the end of the game
when Draayer knocked down his sixth three-pointer fo the game to tie it
at 77 and send the game into overtime.

In overtime, the Thunder jumped to five-point lead. The Knights fought
back and tied it up at 84 off another Draayer three-pointer. The
Thunder scored two more points from the free throw line and Draayer
nailed his eighth three-point basket of the game with three seconds
left. Wheaton scored a pair of shots from the free throw line, giving
the Thunder a 91-87 win.

"Our defensive effort was really disappointing," said Calvin's head
coach Kevin
VandeStreek. "We scored more than enough to win the game. We just didn't
get it done on defense inside the last four minutes of regulation."

The Knights were led by Draayer with a career scoring high of 26 points,
including eight three-point field goals. Trewhella put 18 points on the
board, senior Dan Aultman [Ludington] scored 14 points, junior Joel
Hoekstra [Hudsonville] contributed 12 points, and Shilts put 10 points
on the board.

Calvin hit 55.2% of its field goal attempts, including 72.5% of its
shots from three-point range.

"We fought very hard offensively," said VandeStreek. "We played very
well offensively."

Wheaton was lead by senior Jonathon Steven with 27 points, senior Jon
Nielson had 18 points, freshman Kent Raymond put up 17 points, and
senior Martin Trimiew contributed 12 points.

Wheaton outrebounded Calvin 40-30. Wheaton's top rebounder was senior
Jim Fortosis with nine rebounds. Calvin's top rebounder was sophomore

Calvin will face 21st ranked Carthage Saturday at 2:00 pm (EST) in a
