MEN'S BASKETBALL
In the Championship game of the Tip-Off Tourney, Calvin College had an
exciting 88-67 win over Eastern University, in spite of a lead Eastern held
through most of the first half.
While Calvin (2-0) scored the first four points of the game off two jumpers by
senior Dan Aultman (Mason County Central High), Eastern (1-1) wasn't far
behind. The Eagles answered with a three-pointer by senior Grandville-native
Brent Voorhees (Tri-Unity Christian High). The teams battled back and forth
until Eastern gained a 13-9 lead, assisted by two consecutive three-pointers by
junior Chris McMonagle (Lancaster, PA).
Calvin tied it up at 15-15 with 11:53 left, on two free-throw shots by junior
Brian Roelofs (Delaware County Christian High, Haverford, PA).
Eastern's senior Ryan Tozer (Norwood, PA) answered quickly with a
three-pointer. Eastern held the lead until three-pointers by seniors Brad Sall
(Unity Christian High) and Josh Vriesman (Denver Christian, Denver, CO) brought
the Knights to a 28-26 lead. Tozer tied it up with a quick jumper. In the
last five minutes of the half, Calvin stepped up the offense and went on a 18
point run, holding the Eagles at 33. Senior Kyle Trewhella (Rockford
Christian) had 12 of those points. At half-time the Knights led 48-33.
The Knights allowed three points at the beginning of the 2nd half, but they
never looked back. Eastern offense put up a great effort, but Eastern defense
couldn't stop the Clavin offense, powered by Aultman, Trewhella, Vriesman,
Sall, and senior Rickey Shilts (Kalamazoo Central).
Calvin head coach Kevin Vande Streek commented, "I was happy with how we
started the game. We just had to adjust to how they were defending. We caught
on at the end of the first half and Kyle Trewhella and Brad Sall contributed
greatly in that run." He also said that the Knights "tightened up
defensively in the second half" which allowed them to hold off the Eastern
offense.
Top scorers for the Knights were Aultman and Trewhella with 19 points each.
Roelofs led Calvin with 8 rebounds, followed by sophomore Josh Meckes (Saginaw
Valley Lutheran) with 7. Meckes also led Calvin with 3 blocks.
On the Eastern side, Tozer grabbed 26 points, followed by Voorhees with 12.
McMonagle led with 9 rebounds.
Grace Bible College d. Philadelphia Biblical University 82-77
The Consolation game of the Tip-Off Tournament was a close game, but Grace
Bible College managed to come away with the win and the 3rd place finish in the
tournament. PBU led 43-40 at half time, but strong scoring by Grace in the
second half accounted for the win.
Grace Bible junior Kirby Bailey led with 12 points, followed by junior Luke
Chomic and freshman Josh Drenth with 11 each. Top scorer for PBU was freshman
Bryndon Mumford with 8 points.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Columbus, OH - Calvin (1-1) sprung out of the gate to acquire its first
victory of the young season in a 72-44 beating of Thiel University of
Pennsylvania. Calvin placed third in the Capital Tip-Off Tournament with their
victory this afternoon.
The Knights jumped out to a 12-0 lead over the first eight and a half minutes
of the game. Calvin sophomore Lisa Winkle (South Christian) scored eight of
Calvin first 12 point, with senior Kristin McDonald (West Catholic) scoring the
other four. Thiel finally scored their first point by making the back end of
two free throws. Calvin also enjoyed a 7-0 run and an 8-2 run on its way to a
36-21 halftime lead.
The second half was very similar to the first with Calvin's pair of 6-0
runs. The Knights sailed through the second half making sure each player on
the team made an appearance in the victory.
Calvin was led in scoring and rebounding by senior Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids
Christian), who dropped 17 points and boarded five basketballs. Winkle also
grabbed five rebounds to help the Knights. Senior Lesa Holleman (SW Minnesota
Christian) had three assists to lead the team, while Winkle had the team's
only block.
As a team, Calvin took thirty more shots than Thiel and shot 43.7% (31-71)
from the field to just 34.1 % (14-41) for Thiel. Some might say the Knights
"stole" the show with their 22 steals, four a piece for McDonald,
Winkle, and senior Rita Ouwinga (NM McBain Christian).
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday night when it plays host to cross-town
rival Aquinas at 7:00 p.m. at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
