CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 16, 2004
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Calvin women's basketball team got a jump on the upcoming 2004-05 season
with a 56-41 defeat at Division II Grand Valley State Tuesday night in
Allendale.
Because of NCAA II and NCAA III rules, the game will count as an official
contest for Grand Valley (1-0) but as just an exhibition game for Division III
Calvin. The official NCAA III start date is this Friday, November 19.
In Tuesday's game with Grand Valley State, Calvin ran into a quick, athletic
group of Lakers that forced the Knights into 25 turnovers by smothering the
passing lanes.
Calvin trailed 31-21 at halftime and trailed by just 10 with 9:11 remaining
but a pair of turnovers and a missed free throw by the Knights allowed Grand
Valley to ignite a 14-2 scoring run that put the game out of reach.
Senior Kristen McDonald (West Catholic HS) led Calvin in scoring with 10
points with senior Lesa Holleman (Chandler, MN) adding seven points and four
rebounds. Calvin shot just 29.3 percent from the floor including just 56
percent (14 of 25) at the free throw line.
Grand Valley also struggled with ball handling as it committed 21 turnovers
but the Lakers also shot 43.4 percent overall and outrebounded Calvin 41-28.
University of Michigan transfer Niki Reams led Grand Valley with 11 boards
with Janine Guastella leading the Lakers in scoring with 15 points. Crystal
Zick and Erika Ryskamp added 10 points apiece for Grand Valley (1-0)
Calvin will officially open its season on Friday at 6:00 p.m. against
nationally-ranked Thomas More of Kentucky in a first round game of a tournament
hosted by Capital University.
The game will be aired via RealAudio courtesy of the Capital Sports
Information Department. A direct link to the broadcast can be found at:
