CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 6 (Part Two)

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

WHEATON, IL * The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams dropped a pair of rugged non-conference dual meets at Wheaton College Saturday afternoon but still came away with several strong performances.

In the men's competition, Calvin was defeated 158-78 by Grand Valley and 145.5-59.5 by Wheaton.

In the women's competition, Calvin fell to Grand Valley 153-89 and to Wheaton 120-110.

Sophomore Rebekah Weima of Grand Rapids Christian High School again had a standout meet as she took first place in the 200 freestyle (1:53.43) and 500 freestyle (5:08.17). Her time in the 200 freestyle was an NCAA III A' cut qualifying time while her time in the 500 freestyle was an NCAA III B' cut qualifying time.

On Friday night in a dual meet victory over Olivet, Weima took first in the 1,000 freestyle with a school record time of 10:52.56, shattering the previous record of 11:00.52 established by fellow Grand Rapids Christian High School graduate Liesje Konyndyk in 1999.

Weima now holds seven individual school records.

Also turning in a standout afternoon for the Calvin women on Saturday at Wheaton was junior Abby Johnson (Grand Haven HS) who took first in the 200 backstroke (2:14.18), second in the 200 breaststroke (2:25.92) and first in the 200 IM (2:12.48). Her time in the 200 breaststroke was an NCAA III B' cut qualifying time.

In addition, Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of freshmen Kat Vinson (Kaneohe, HI) and Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL) and sophomores Liz Ingebrigtsen (Bensenville, IL) and Weima took first place with an NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of 3:37.32.

Senior Anna Battoclette (Cincinnati, OH) also turned in a strong showing in taking third place on the one-meter diving board (215.55).

Calvin also faired well in the sprints as Vinson took fourth in the 50 freestyle (25.11) and Duncan third in the 100 freestyle (55.40).

In the men's competition, Calvin received individual victories from senior Peter Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) in the 200 freestyle (1:46.45) and 200 butterfly (1:58.45). Junior Luke Bagnall (Marshalltown, IA) took second in the 200 IM (2:02.57) and fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:05.88).

Sophomore Peter Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a strong effort in taking third in the 1,000 freestyle (10:47.05).

Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of freshman John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL), Tuuk, sophomore Andrew Resseguie (Holland Christian HS) and Peter Boumgarden took first place in a time of 3:14.91.

Both Calvin teams return to action next Saturday when it competes at a quadrangular including teams from Case Western Reserve, Denison and Kalamazoo. The competition will be held at the University of Michigan.
