CALVIN ATHLETES RECEIVE WEEKLY AWARDS FROM MIAA
MEN'S SOCCER
For the fourth time in his collegiate career, Calvin College senior forward
Joel Veldhouse has been named the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week.
A native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and a graduate of Sioux Falls Christian
High School, Veldhouse scored five goals and collected one assist last week in
leading the nationally-ranked Calvin men's soccer team to victories over Ohio
Northern and Tri-State University. In a 4-1 win over Ohio Northern last
Tuesday, Veldhouse chalked up his second collegiate hat-trick and the eighth
multiple-goal match of his Calvin career. He then scored two goals and picked
up an assist in a 3-0 win at Tri-State Saturday afternoon.
A two-time All-MIAA and Great Lakes All-Region selection, Veldhouse leads the
Knights in scoring with six goals, one assist and 13 points.
Ranked 23rd in the latest NCAA III Top-25 poll, Calvin is currently 6-0-1
overall and 1-0-0 in the MIAA. With its 6-0-1 start, Calvin is off to the best
start in school history.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Adrian for a 4:00
p.m. match. The Knights will then host Albion on Saturday in a 1:30 p.m.
contest.
VOLLEYBALL
For the first time in her collegiate career, Calvin junior Christine Hendricks
has received MIAA Player of the Week accolades. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio,
and a graduate of Turpin High School, Hendricks led the Knights to a pair of
conference victories. In a three-game sweep of Albion she had a .435 attack
percentage behind 11 kills in 23 attempts. She followed in a three-game sweep
of Hope with 11 kills in 21 attempts for a .381 attack percentage.
Calvin (9-1 overall, 5-0 MIAA) will open a rugged week of action Tuesday night
when it hosts Kalamazoo at 7:00 p.m. Kalamazoo is currently 4-0 in the MIAA
and one win behind first place Calvin in the league standings. On Wednesday
Calvin will journey to Alma for a 6:30 p.m. match. The two-time defending MIAA
champion Scots are currently 15-0 overall and 3-0 in the MIAA.
On Friday and Saturday, Calvin will compete at the Wittenberg Invitational.
The Knights will face seventh-ranked Ohio Northern at 2:00 p.m. and then meet
host and third-ranked Wittenberg at 8:30 p.m. On Saturday, Calvin will face
Baldwin-Wallace and Case Western Reserve.
