CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 15, 2004
WOMEN'S SOCCER
A pair of momentary defensive lapses cost Calvin dearly in a 5-3 conference loss to visiting Albion Wednesday afternoon at Calvin Field.
Holding a 2-0 lead, Calvin gave up two goals in a span of a minute-and-17 seconds, causing the Knight lead to vanish.
Also vanishing was Calvin's momentum as the Britons (1-4-0 overall, 1-0-0 MIAA) went on to score three second half goals to pull away for the 5-3 win.
With the wind at its back, Calvin had all of the momentum in the opening 25 minutes as junior Kara Zuidema (Escondido, CA) scored on a pass from sophomore Jill Capel (Unity Christian HS) just 3:24 into the match and Capel followed with an unassisted goal in the 20th minute. Calvin nearly took a 3-0 lead on a near breakaway by sophomore Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian HS) moments later but a slide tackle by an Albion defender prevented a shot into a wide-open Albion net.
Albion then got on the scoreboard in the 28th minute as Maggie Betscher was left unattended in front of the net on a corner kick play and one-timed a shot into the right hand portion of the net. Just over a minute later, Albion's Ashley Rosaen was stole a bouncing ball behind Calvin goaltender Linda Heilman (South Christian HS) and whipped in a shot to knot the score at two goals apiece.
Albion then scored two goals just three minutes apart in the opening 15 minutes of the second half, giving the Britons four goals on just seven shots at that juncture of the contest. Freshman Brittany Cortese scored the go-ahead tally and sophomore Krystyn Darmafall added Albion's fourth goal in the 59th minute. Calvin was able to cut the lead to one on a rush by Capel through the left side of the Albion box with Weesies drawing an assist on the play. The goal with 14:02 left to play was the fourth of the year for Capel.
Any momentum gained was quickly lost however as Cortese stole a pass in the Calvin defensive backfield and ripped in her second goal of the game.
Calvin (2-4-0 overall, 2-1-0 MIAA) finished with a 19-12 shots at goal advantage but Albion held an 8-6 shots at goal advantage in the second half.
Heilman collected four saves in nets for the Knights while Deanna DeRoo had nine saves for the Britons.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it journeys to Olivet for a match slated to start at noon.
