CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2004
MEN'S SOCCER
ADA, OH * An explosive offensive performance by senior midfielder Joel Veldhouse propelled Calvin to a 4-1 victory at non-conference rival Ohio Northern University Tuesday afternoon. Veldhouse collected his first collegiate hat-trick in leading the Knights to the victory over the host Polar Bears including a pair of goals in the first half that helped stake Calvin to a 3-1 halftime lead.
The scoring pace was fast and furious in the opening minutes as the two teams combined for three goals in the first 9:05 of regulation. Veldhouse put the Knights (5-0-1) on the scoreboard first by whipping in a direct kick from 25 yards out just 5:28 into in the match. Ohio Northern (3-3-0) would knot the score on a goal by freshman Jon Rolfe just two minutes later but in the 10th minute of play, Calvin senior Joel Vande Kopple (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was able to rip in a shot off a corner kick by sophomore Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian HS) with junior Matt Cosnek (Hopewell, PA) also drawing an assist on the play.
Veldhouse then went to work again midway through the first half as he took a feed from sophomore John VanWylen (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and ripped in a shot with just over 16 minutes left in the opening period to give the Knights a two-goal lead.
Veldhouse would provide an insurance goal at the 56:16 mark of the match as he laced in a cross from junior Levi Kool (Holland Christian HS) for his fourth goal of the year and third of the match. Ohio Northern was forced to play a man short for nearly the entire second half as a Polar Bear player was assessed a red card early in the second half.
Calvin finished the match with a commanding 25-9 shots at goal advantage with junior Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) picking up four saves in 73 minutes of action while freshman Dave Fortosis (Wheaton, IL) saw his first collegiate action in goal for the Knights and was credited with one save.
Ranked 23rd nationally (NCAA III) and third in the Great Lakes Region for the second straight week, Calvin will prepare to open its MIAA campaign on Saturday when it travels to Tri-State University for a match slated to start at 2:30 p.m. (EDT) and 1:30 p.m. (EST).

VOLLEYBALL
ALBION * Calvin stretched its win streak to eight and remained unbeaten in the MIAA in the process as the Knights rolled to a 30-22, 30-20, 30-24 victory over Albion Tuesday night at the Kresge Gymnasium.
With the win, Calvin (8-1 overall, 4-0 MIAA) moved into sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings, one victory ahead of second place Kalamazoo and Alma.
Calvin took advantage of several Albion service errors in game one and then picked up momentum in game two behind the torrid play of Calvin senior middle-hitter Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian HS) who would finish the match with 10 kills, four aces, four digs, two blocks and a hitting percentage of .333. Albion took an early 13-8 lead in game three but could not hold the lead as the Knights were able to close out the match.
In addition to Kuipers, junior Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) had 11 kills, five blocks and a sizzling attack percentage of .435. Sophomore Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) added eight kills and 11 digs while senior Kristin DeGroot (Tulare, CA) had 17 digs and five kills. MEN'S GOLF
What a difference one round can make. After struggling through a round of 89 in the first MIAA outing of the year held last week at the Medalist Golf Club, Calvin sophomore Jeff TenBrink (Kalamazoo Christian HS) was ready to turn his game up a notch or two.
TenBrink did just that with a blistering round of 70 Tuesday afternoon at the second MIAA outing of the year to earn co-medalist honors along with Olivet's Mike Dinner. Tuesday's outing was hosted by Olivet. TenBrink's one-under round enabled Calvin to post a fourth place team score of 313 on Tuesday, a one-place improvement over its team finish at last week's league outing.
Calvin remains in fifth place in the overall team standings but is just nine strokes behind fourth place Albion and is now 11 strokes ahead of sixth place Alma.
Host Olivet captured Tuesday's outing with a team score of 294 with Tri-State just one stroke behind in second place, allowing the Thunder to remain in first place in the overall team standings.
Also firing a sub-80 round for the Knights on Tuesday was senior Matt Kelly (Western Michigan Christian HS) with a score of 78. Rounding out Calvin's finishers on Tuesday were senior Mike Bratt (Lynden, WA) with an 80, sophomore Tim VanVugt () with an 85 and sophomore Jake Wolffis (Western Michigan Christian HS) with an 87.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it participates at MIAA outing #3. The outing will be hosted by Tri-State University at the Zollner Golf Club.
