Calvin Sports Report for September 13, 2004
WOMEN'S SOCCER
For the second time in her collegiate career, Calvin sweeper back Tricia
DeVries has been named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week in women's soccer.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School,
DeVries was a key factor in a pair of conference victories for the Knights last
week as the Knights defeated Kalamazoo 2-1 and Alma 4-1.
Calvin is currently 2-3 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA. Calvin returns to action
on Wednesday when it hosts Albion at 4:00 p.m. at Calvin Field in a conference
match.
The contest will be broadcast via RealAudio via the Calvin web site at
www.Calvin.edu/sports.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The Calvin men's cross country team will enter its 2004 campaign the same
way it closed out its 2003 season as the Knights are ranked number-one in the
first NCAA III Top-25 poll of the year. A year ago, Calvin carried the
number-one ranking into the national meet and lived up to its billing as it
posted a first place score of 48 points to capture its second national title in
four years. Calvin placed six runners in the top-35 at the NCAA III
Championships to become the first school in NCAA III men's cross country
history to have six individuals achieve NCAA III All-America status in the same
year.
Calvin received all five first place votes in the initial poll of the year
with Wisconsin-LaCrosse ranked fourth. Calvin is one of two MIAA teams in the
top-25 as Albion is ranked 25th.
On the women's side, Calvin has also cracked the top-25 as the Knights are
ranked 24th. A year ago, Calvin took 15th at the NCAA III Championships with
341 points.
Three Calvin fall sports teams have now cracked the national rankings this
month as the men's soccer team was ranked 23rd in last week's Division III
Top-25 poll.
The complete NCAA III cross country polls can be found on-line at:
www.Raceberryjam.com/ncaapolls.html.
Both Calvin cross country teams will open their seasons this Saturday. Calvin
will send 10 women and 10 men across the country this week to compete at the
Sunbadger Invitational hosted by the University of Washington in Seattle. The
meet will allow senior Hendrik Kok of the men's cross country team to run in
from of a group of hometown fans as Kok hails from Lynden, Washington and is a
graduate of Lynden Christian High School. Calvin's cross country contingent
is scheduled to lead a series of chapels on Friday at Lynden Christian High
School.
Calvin will also send a group of runners to the Parkside Invitational in
Kenosha, Wisconsin on Saturday.
Both teams open their MIAA campaigns on September 25 at an MIAA jamboree
hosted by Hope College.
