CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MAY 14, 2004
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
NAPERVILLE, IL * The first day of competition at the Dr. Keeler Invitational hosted by North Central College is complete and after one day, a pair of Calvin distance runners have strengthened their positions in gaining trips to the upcoming NCAA III Championships.
In the men's 5,000 meter run completed late Thursday night, Calvin received strong NCAA III provisional qualifying times from seniors Matt Edwards (Grand Blanc HS) and Dave Haagsma (South Christian HS) as Edwards was third in 14:31.90 with Haagsma sixth in 14:37.98. Both times will likely advance the Calvin duo to the national meet in the 5,000 meters. Edwards and Haagsma have already qualified automatically in the 10,000 meters.
Also producing provisional qualifying times in the 5,000 meters from Calvin were seniors Tim Avery (Rochester, NY) and Hendrik Kok (Lynden, WA) as Kok was 12th (14:48.32) and Avery 15th (14:51.00). Avery has already produced a time of 14:48.29 this year. Both Avery and Kok will likely need faster times to qualify in the 5,000 meters however.
In the women's competition on Thursday, senior Katie Corner (Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) took first with a throw of 154-3 despite less-than-ideal conditions to compete in with rain and thunderstorms sweeping through the area.
Competition continues today and will be completed late this evening. A full report of Friday's action will be provided Saturday afternoon.
