CALVIN WINS WOMEN'S ALL-SPORTS TROPHY

GRAND RAPIDS * For the first time in school history, Calvin has won the MIAA Women's All-Sports Award. In addition, Calvin has finished third in the Men's All-Sports standings and second in the all-around MIAA Commissioner's Cup Standings.

From 1934-35 thru 1997-98, the conference awarded an All-Sports Award. Beginning in 1998-99, the award was renamed the Commissioner's Cup and separate Men's and Women's All-Sports Award were established. Since then, Hope had won five straight Women's All-Sports Awards until this year.

The standings are determined on the basis of each college's standings in eight of nine sports for men and eight of nine sports for women. These point totals are added together to determine the winner of the Commissioner's Cup, the Men's All-Sports Award and the Women's All-Sports Award.

This past year, Calvin's women's athletic teams captured MIAA titles in cross country, basketball and track and field while finishing second in soccer, volleyball and swimming and diving. The Knights also took third in women's tennis and softball for a final total of 97 points, five points ahead of second place Hope.

In the men's standings, Calvin tallied 67 points, trailing second place Albion (73 points) and first place Hope (85 points). During the year, Calvin's men's athletic teams captured MIAA titles in cross country, soccer and track and field.

In the final Commissioner's Cup standings, Calvin posted a second place total of 164 points, 13 points behind first place Hope with Albion taking third with 142 points. In taking first place, Hope captured the MIAA Commissioner's Cup for a league-leading 26th straight time.

In terms of cumulative MIAA titles this year, Hope led the league with seven with Calvin second with six. Albion, Alma and St. Mary's were third with two league championships apiece.
