JIM DETERS NAMED MIAA BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

For the third time in his collegiate career, Calvin junior Jim Deters has been
named MIAA Pitcher of the Week.

A native of Portage and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Deters
picked up his fifth collegiate shutout victory including his second in
conference play this past Friday in a 1-0 nine-inning victory over visiting
Adrian College.

Deters went the distance in the win over the Bulldogs, striking out six while
walking none and scattering five hits. The lone run of the game came in the
bottom of the ninth as senior Darrell Heuker cracked a leadoff walk-off home
run.

Deters is now 4-3 on the year with a 1.73 ERA. He is currently 2-3 in MIAA
games with a 2.15 ERA. Deters leads the league in strikeouts (41) and is third
in innings pitched (37.2) and sixth in earned run average.

Calvin is currently 13-23 on the season and will host Madonna University
tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. in a non-conference game. The Knights will then open up
a three-game MIAA series on Thursday against league-leading Albion at 4:00 p.m.
with Deters scheduled to pitch for the Knights.

CALVIN TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS RANKED IN TOP 10 IN LATEST MF-ATHLETIC POWER
RANKINGS

The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams are once again ranked
highly in the latest set of NCAA Division III power rankings. Sponsored by the
MF Athletic Company, the power rankings have been released since 1999 and
reflect the strength of a track and field team in head-to-head dual meet
competition.

The power rankings are tabulated by a cumulative point system. To submit a
team for ranking, a school must submit two individuals in each events that is

used in a head-to-head dual meet. In submitting an entry, the best time or
performance of the year for the individual is submitted. An individual may not

be listed in more than three individual events in the final weekly team entry.

In the latest Division III power rankings, the Calvin women's track and field

team is ranked second nationally with a cumulative score of 185.22, just over
a
point under the first place score of 186.76 held by Willamette (OR)
University. In
the men's rankings, Calvin is ranked ninth with a cumulative team score of
180.30 which is just over three points better than 10th place Anderson
University which is the only other team from the Great Lakes Region (along with
Calvin) to be ranked in the top-10. Willamette (OR) University is also the
top-ranked team in the men's power rankings with a cumulative team score of
205.67.
At the conclusion of the season, the team with the highest rankings in both
the
men's and women's polls will receive trophies from the MF Athletic Company.
The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh was the recent winner for the women's
indoor season while the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater was the winner for
the men's indoor
season.
Over the last two years, the Calvin women have finished second in the final
power rankings. In 2003, Calvin finished with a cumulative team score of
207.81, 10 points behind first place Williams (MA) College. In 2002, the
Calvin women posted a season-ending final score of 206.52, less than five
points behind first place Wisconsin-LaCrosse. The second place finishes are
Calvin's best-ever finishes in the power rankings.
Calvin's highest finish in the men's rankings came in 2001 when it posted a
final season score of 204.07 which was good for fourth place. In 2003, Calvin
finished 17th with a final cumulative score of 200.98.
