CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MONDAY, APRIL 5, 2004
SOFTBALL

The Knights kicked off a busy week of softball on Monday, splitting a pair of
games with Cornerstone University. The Golden Eagles took the first game 8-0 in
five innings with the Knights responding for a 3-1 win in the nightcap.
Calvin (9-7 overall, 4-0 MIAA) will travel and play four games over the course
of the next three days as it will face St. Mary's in league action on Tuesday
and Alma in conference play on Thursday. Listen to the Alma game via RealAudio
Broadcast with Mark Christner and Ross Weener at the microphone. Pre-game is
set to begin at 3:20 p.m.
In game one Jill Scholten (Holland Christian) took the loss giving up four
runs before being relived by junior Kara Van Kooten (Anchorage, AK/Grace
Christian) who also gave up four runs. The Knights could only muster two hits
over the course of game one.
Freshman Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID/Idaho School for the Deaf) took the
mound for the Knights in the second game and the Calvin bats awoke, breaking
out for three runs and seven hits. Spooner picked up the win as she went the
distance and improved to 4-1 on the season. Calvin broke the 1-1 tie in the top
of the sixth inning as designated player Abby Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian)
and centerfielder Scholten each notched RBI singles with two outs.
