CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 30, 2004

BASEBALL

KALAMAZOO - Calvin opened its MIAA campaign with a doubleheader split at
Kalamazoo Tuesday afternoon as the Knights were victorious in game one by a
10-0 score and then dropped a 6-5 decision in the nightcap.

In the opener, Calvin (4-8) rode the right arm of junior Jim Deters (Kalamazoo
Christian HS) as he carried a no-hitter through five innings while the Knights
jumped out to a 9-0 lead. Working on a strict pitch count, Deters was relieved
by freshman Brian Vande Streek (Unity Christian HS) at the onset of the sixth
inning. Vande Streek carried the no-hit bid into the seventh before the
Hornets (2-10) were able to break through for their only hit of the game on a
one-out single. Vande Streek then retired the next two batters to close out
the victory.

Deters (2-0) picked up the victory to run his collegiate record to 15-2
overall and his career MIAA mark to 10-0. Deters struck out eight batters and
walked only one in facing just 15 batters.

Sophomore Tim Stoeffler (Ionia HS) led the Knights at the plate by going
3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Senior Aaron Griffith (Manhattan, KZ)
and junior Josh Vriesman (Denver, CO) also collected two hits apiece as the
Knights outhit the Hornets 9-1 in the win. Four of Calvin's nine hits were
of the extra-base variety with Stoeffler, Griffith, Vriesman and sophomore
Tyler VanEps (Denver, CO) collecting doubles.

In game two, Kalamazoo rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to
claim a come-from-behind win. Kalamazoo took an early 2-0 lead with a run in
the first and a run in the third off of Calvin freshman starter Ross Dykstra
(Holland Christian HS). Both runs were unearned.

Calvin tied the score with single runs in the fourth and fifth and then built
a 4-2 lead with two runs in the top of the sixth as VanEps picked up an RBI
single and senior Darrell Heuker (Unity Christian HS) an RBI double.

Kalamazoo came back with two runs off of Calvin sophomore reliever Andy
Draayer (Denver, CO) in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score at 4-4.
In the top of the seventh, Calvin took a 5-4 lead on a two-out rally as
Stoeffler reached base on an error, stole second and then scored on an RBI
single by senior Terry O'Neal (Muskegon Reeths-Puffer HS).

The lead would not stand however as Kalamazoo used a walk and a hit batter to
place its first two hitters on base. An RBI double then tied the score and
with the bases loaded moments later, the Hornets completed the rally with an
RBI single.

Calvin senior Dean Thompson (Ogemaw Heights HS) was charged with the pitching
defeat to fall to 0-2 on the year. Calvin outhit Kalamazoo 7-6 in the loss but
also committed four errors.

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Northwood Institute at
3:00 p.m. in a non-conference game.
