CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 25, 2004

BASEBALL

FORT MYERS, FL -The Calvin men's baseball team picked up a 4-1 victory
against Washington and Jefferson on Thursday. Calvin improved their overall
record to 4-3 on the season.

The Knights earned the victory with strong pitching and timely two-out hitting
with all of Calvin's runs being scored with two outs. In a two-run second
inning, sophomore Mark Asma (Kalamazoo Christian) doubled in two runs to put
Calvin up early. Calvin got another run in the third inning when sophomore
Tyler Van Eps (Denver, CO) singled in senior Terry O'Neal
(Muskegon/Reeths-Puffer). Washington and Jefferson got one run back in the top
of the fourth inning, but Calvin was able to add on in the bottom of the fourth
as O'Neal singled in sophomore Tim Stoeffler (St. Joseph) with Calvin's
fourth and final run.

Freshman starting pitcher Ross Dykstra (Holland Christian) went 3.2 innings
and held Washington and Jefferson to two hits and one earned run while striking
out three. Dykstra got the victory, the first of his college career.
Sophomore Andy Draayer (Denver, CO) and senior Dean Thompson (Gladwin/Ogemaw
Heights) combined to allow only one hit over the rest of the game with Thompson
earning the save.

SOFTBALL

ORLANDO, FL - The Calvin softball team earned a pair of wins on Thursday in
Kissimmee, Florida at the Rebel Games. The Knights knocked off Manchester 4-0
and University of the South 8-0 to garner their first wins of the season.
Calvin now stands 2-6 on the season with two games left on its Spring Break
trip.

In game one the Knights rode a stellar pitching effort from freshman pitcher
Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID/Idaho School for the Deaf) to collect a 4-0
win over Manchester. Spooner earned the complete game victory as she worked all
seven innings while only giving up four hits. In addition, she walked none and
struck out twelve--the most by a Calvin pitcher since Shauna Koolhas in 1998.
She also retired the side in order four of the possible seven innings. Spooner
has given up only one earned run in 13.0 innings pitched while her ERA is a
miniscule 0.54.

The Knights jumped out in front early as the top of the lineup produced the
first run. Leadoff batter Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern) belted a triple
out to the fence and the second batter for the Knights, Angie Sietsema
(Grandville), doubled in J. Cole to give Calvin a 1-0 lead.

While the defense stood tall, committing no errors, the Knight offense went to
work again in the fourth inning. Junior Laurel Sands (Rockford) began the
inning with a single, was sacrificed to second base, and advanced to third base
on a bunt single by Chandra Fynaardt (Pella, IA/Pella Christian). Sands scored
on a J. Cole infield single while Fynaardt was thrown out at home on a Sietsema
fielder's choice. J. Cole and Sietsema both scored as Lea Bareman (Unity
Christian) reached base on a fielding error on the right fielder. All in all
the Knights scored three runs on three hits in the inning.

In the second game the Knights received another solid pitching effort, this
time from junior Kara Van Kooten (Anchorage, AK/Grace Christian). Van Kooten
only needed to work five innings to garner the win as the game ended in a
mercy-rule situation. It was Van Kootens first win of the year as she gave up
two hits, one walk, and three strike-outs.

Calvin scored in every inning but the first, as it tacked up eight runs on
only six hits on the University of the South, who committed five errors. The
Knights got on the board in the second as freshman Kristen Kalb (Stow,
OH/Munroe Falls) grounded out to shortstop, scoring Rachel Dyksterhouse
(Kalamazoo Christian) from third base. Calvin would tack on another run in the
third and a three-spot in the fourth. The Calvin defense made no errors and
made things easy on Van Kooten, who is now 1-3 on the year with a 2.77 ERA. The
Knights ended the game in the fifth inning by aggressive base running and poor
defense as the University of the South's catcher committed two errors that
led to the game-ending runs.

Calvin will finish its southern swing on Friday with games against DePauw
(8:50 am) and Mount Vernon (12:30 pm). Check out www.calvin.edu/sports for all
the scores, statistics, and recaps of the action.
