CALVIN WEEKEND SPORTS WRAP-UP FOR FEB. 7, 2004
MEN'S BASKETBALL
For the second time this year, Calvin junior forward Dan Aultman has been named
MIAA Player of the Week in men's basketball.
A native of Ludington and a graduate of Mason County Central High School,
Aultman scored 45 points and grabbed eight rebounds last week in leading the
Knights to conference victories over Albion and Kalamazoo. In a 100-65 win
over Albion Wednesday night, Aultman poured in 28 points on 9 of 16 shooting
including a 10 for 10 performance at the free throw line.
He then added 18 points in a 79-67 win over Kalamazoo Saturday.
Over the course of the week, Aultman was 16 of 25 from the floor and 13 of 13
at the free throw line. He also connected on one three-point field goal and
was credited with four assists and four steals on the week. He also made just
two turnovers in 55 minutes of action.
Aultman currently leads the MIAA scoring race with 168 points in nine league
games for a scoring average of 18.7 points a game.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday night when it travels to Olivet for a
7:30 p.m. contest. The Knights are currently 13-8 overall and in second place
in the MIAA standings with a 6-3 conference mark.
MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin opened its 2004 campaign with a third place finish (8 points) at the
Grand Rapids City Tournament Friday and Saturday. Aquinas (16 points) took
first place honors with Grand Valley (10 points) taking second and Grand Rapids
Community College (2 points) placing fourth.
Calvin did not capture a singles or doubles flight in the tournament but did
send several individuals into the championship finals.
At No. 1 singles, Calvin junior Kevin Van Haitsma (Unity Christian HS reached
the championship final before falling to Jason Winegar of Aquinas 6-1, 4-6,
7-5. Junior Jon Miedema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) reached the finals at No.
2 singles before falling to Kyle Klinge of Grand Valley State 6-3, 6-2. At.
No. 5 singles, sophomore Dave Bratt (Grand Rapids Christian HS) reached the
final before falling to Justin Sauerbrey of Grand Valley 7-5, 7-5.
Miedema and senior Mark Betten (Kalamazoo Christian HS) then reached the finals
at No. 2 doubles, falling 7-6, 6-2 to a team from Aquinas.
Calvin returns to action on February 21 when it travels to Wisconsin to take on
Division III opponents St. Norbert and Lakeland in non-conference dual matches.
