CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2004

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Two years of Homecoming frustration are over for the Calvin men's basketball
team. After falling in both the 2002 and 2003 Homecoming match-ups with Albion
College, the Knights (13-8, 6-3 MIAA) were able to take care of a pesky
Kalamazoo College squad in come-from-behind fashion, 79-67. The win also
secures the Knights at least a share of second place in the MIAA after
today's action.

Early on, it looked as though the Hornets (7-14, 2-7 MIAA) were going to spoil
yet another Homecoming for the Knights. Kalamazoo used a frenetic pace and
tenacious defence to take an early lead, holding a slim advantage for much of
the half. A Chris Prins 3-pointer with 4 minutes left pulled the Knights
within one at 28-27, but Kalamazoo then rattled off a 13-0 run to end the half.
A Ricky Shilts (Kalamazoo Central) lay-up at the horn ended the scoring
drought and cut the deficit to 41-30 at the break.

The second half was a different and much more exciting story for Calvin, as a
rejuvenated squad came out of the locker room and used an early 19-0 run to
turn a 9-point deficit into a 58-48 lead with 8 minutes left. The Knights were
able to hold the Hornets scoreless for just over 7 minutes during that span.
Once the Hornets finally did find the bottom of the net, their hopes of a
comeback were crushed repeatedly by the Knights. Calvin calmly traded buckets
with Kalamazoo kept the lead to above 6 points the rest of the way.

The Knights struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just 38%
(12-32), while Kalamazoo shot a sizzling 62% (16-26). The Hornets cooled off
in the second half (31 %) and Calvin connected on 45% of its shots in the
second stanza to end the came with a 41% clip. Kalamazoo held a slim 38-37
advantage on the boards.

Three Knights reached double-figures in the win, with junior Dan Aultman
(Mason County Central) leading the way with 18 points. Senior Chris Prins
(Escondido Calvin Christian) made his mark with 16, and senior Kevin Broene
(Grand Rapids Christian) added 12 points.

Three Hornets made it to double-digit land, as both Tony Wichmann and Jevon
Caldwell-Gross tallied 14 points and Phil Weaver netted 11 points.

Calvin returns to action this Wednesday, when it travels to Olivet to take on
the Comets in a 7:30 affair.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Calvin women's basketball team did not let a little Hornet sting derail
its win streak, as the Knights knocked off Kalamazoo 58-46. The win pushes the
Calvin win streak to 15 games and keeps the Knights a half game back of Hope
for first place in the MIAA.

The Hornets (12-9 overall, 5-6 MIAA) were quick out of the gate, amassing a
12-5 lead with 13:18 left in the first half. Calvin was quick to respond and
posted a 24-4 run to end the first half and enter halftime with a 29-16
advantage. From that point on the Knights did not look back cruising to a 58-46
victory.

Calvin (17-3 overall, 10-1 MIAA) was paced by senior Kim Wolthuis (South
Christian) who tallied 17 points, four assists, three steals, and two blocks.
Junior center Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian) pitched in 13 points, four
rebounds, and three steals. Freshman Lisa Winkle also pitched in six points,
six rebounds, and four blocks in a performance limited by foul trouble.

Overall, the Knights forced 24 Hornet turnovers while liming their own
turnovers to 17.

While Calvin shot 42.1 percent (24-of-57) from the field it could only muster
2-of-18 (11.1 percent) from behind the arc. In fact, the Knights are a dismal
6-of-56 (10.7 percent) from behind the three-point line in their last four
games.

The Hornets out-rebounded the Knights by a 40-33 edge and shot 16-of-51 from
the floor, including 1-of-5 from three-point territory.

The win for the Knights was the first in a three-game home-stand as they will
play Thursday night (7:00 p.m.) against Rochester (MI) and against Olivet (3:00
p.m.) in conference action on Saturday afternoon.
