LISA WINKLE NAMED MIAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK
GRAND RAPIDS * For the first time in her career, Calvin freshman Lisa Winkle has received MIAA Player of the Week honors in women's basketball. A 6-0 forward, Winkle shares the award this week with Albion junior Sarah Caskey.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids South Christian High School, Winkle posted back-to-back double-double performances last week in leading Calvin to a pair of victories.
In a 62-53 victory over Alma Thursday night, Winkle matched her career scoring high with 17 points while also grabbing 12 rebounds. In a 70-64 win over Tri-State Saturday afternoon, Winkle established new career-highs in points and rebounds as she scored 27 points and grabbed 16 boards while also blocking five shots and collecting two steals. Winkle connected on her first eight field goal attempts of the game on Saturday and finished with nine field goals while also connecting on nine-of-11 attempts at the free throw line. In addition, Winkle did not commit a turnover in 32 minutes of action in Saturday's win over Tri-State.
On the week, Winkle was 15-of-27 from the floor and 14-of-16 at the free throw line. She also blocked nine shots and collected three steals. In the latest set of NCAA III statistics, Winkle is ranked 10th in field goal percentage as she is connecting on 59 percent of her field goal attempts.
Winkle has now posted four double-double performances this year including three in her last four games.
Calvin is currently 15-3 on the year and in second place in the MIAA standings with an 8-1 conference mark, a half-game behind league-leading Hope. Since opening the year with a 2-3 record, Calvin has won 13 consecutive games.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday when they travel to St. Mary's for a 7:30 p.m. MIAA contest. On Saturday, Calvin will host Kalamazoo at 12:30 p.m. in a MIAA game that will be played in front of a homecoming crowd at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
