Calvin Sports Report for Thursday, January 29

WOMENS BASKETBALL

A struggling outside attack could not keep the Lady Knights from extending
their winning streak to 12 games as Calvin moved into a first place tie with
Hope College Thursday night with a 63-52 win over the visiting Alma Scots.
The Lady Knights were forced to rely heavily on their inside game, as Calvin
failed to convert on a three-point basket in the first half (0-12) and finished
a dismal 11% (2-18) from beyond the arc. Calvin was saved by its better than
50% shooting from within the arc in the first half (13-25), and took a 28-26
lead into the break.
Calvin's three-point woes continued in the second half, but the dominant
inside game of freshman Lisa Winkle (South Christian) kept the Lady Knights in
front. Winkle tallied 11 of the first 13 points for Calvin in the second half,
giving the Lady Knights a 41-37 lead with 10 minutes left. Junior Lesa
Holleman (SW Minnesota Christian) provided instant offense off of the bench for
Calvin a picked up where Winkle left off as she reeled off 8 strait points for
the Lady Knights in just over two minutes, putting the Knights up 56-49 with
three minutes remaining. From there, Calvin coasted to the final 63-52 margin.

Winkle led all scorers with 17 points, tying a career-high, while grabbing 12
boards and swatting 4 shots. Winkle's double-double was the third of her
young career.
Holleman finished with 10 points on 5-6 shooting, while junior Lisa Nanninga
(Grand Rapids Christian) picked up 8 points on 4-5 shooting for Calvin. Junior
Kristen McDonald (West Catholic) led the Lady Knights with 7 assists.
MIAA scoring leader Karen Hall (West Catholic) led Alma with 15 points
including 7-8 from the charity stripe. Calvin outrebounded the Scots by a
35-23 count.
The Lady Knights will be looking to make it lucky number 13 when they play
host to the Tri-State Thunder in a non-conference match-up on Saturday at 3
p.m.
