MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin moved into sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings with a
95-45 victory at Alma College Wednesday evening at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
Now 10-6 overall and 4-1 in the MIAA, the Knights are a half-game ahead of
second place Hope (3-1) and a full game ahead of third place Olivet (3-2). On
Saturday, Calvin and Hope will meet for the 153rd time in a game scheduled to
be held at the Holland Civic Center at 3:00 p.m..
In its victory over the Scots (2-14 overall, 0-4 MIAA), Calvin used a 37-11
run to open the game that included five three-point baskets. The Knights would
go on to lead 53-24 at halftime and never look back.
Senior Kevin Broene (Grand Rapids Christian HS) led the Knights in scoring
with 18 points on 5 of 8 shooting as well as 6 of 7 at the free throw line.
Sophomore guard Kyle Trewhella (Rockford HS) had a big game for Calvin off the
bench with a career-high 16 points on 6 of 11 shooting including 3 of 3 from
beyond the arc. Sophomores Andy Draayer (Denver, CO) and Joel Hoekstra (Unity
Christian HS) were next for the Knights with 13 points apiece with senior Chris
Prins (Escondido, CA) chipping in with 10. Senior center Ryan Smalligan (East
Grand Rapids HS) continued to lead the Knights on the boards with eight caroms
while also collecting three assists and two blocked shots.
Alma was led by Anthony Jones who scored nine points with Brian Hall adding
eight.
Calvin shot 45.7 percent from the floor and 83.3 percent (20 of 24) at the
free throw line. The Knights also connected on 11 of 28 attempts from
three-point range for a 39.3 percent clip. Alma shot just 22.6 percent overall
and just 17.4 percent (4 of 23) from beyond the arc. In addition, Calvin held
a 52-35 rebounding edge.
Saturday's game between Calvin and Hope features a series that began during
the 1920-21 season. Calvin leads the all-time series 78-74 but 15th-ranked
Hope (13-3 overall) has won three of the last four meetings. Saturday's game
at the Holland Civic Center will be televised live to a regional audience
throughout West Michigan by WGVU TV-35/52. A satellite feed of the game will
also be aired throughout the country at several locations with alumni gathered
from both schools.
