CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR JANUARY 20, 2004
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin's four-game losing skid against Albion College is over while its
10-game win streak is still very much alive.
Calvin snapped a four-game losing streak against the Britons with a
come-from-behind 59-50 victory Tuesday night at the Calvin Fieldhouse. The
victory was Calvin's first against the Britons since February of 2002. It
also allowed the Knights to stretch their win streak to 10 games and remain in
sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings at 6-1, one game behind
league-leading Hope.
Calvin will play for a share of first place Saturday night against the Flying
Dutch in a game scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Hope's Dow Center.
Calvin withstood a nine--minute scoring drought that began with over six
minutes left in the first half and continued three minutes into the second
half. Calvin had taken a 26-23 lead with 6:12 left in the half before Albion
scored the final six points of the first half and the first six points of the
second half to build a 35-26 lead.
Calvin (12-3 overall) then ripped off a 12-2 scoring run of its own to build a
38-37 lead with senior Andrea Estelle (Allendale HS) giving the Knights the
lead on a layup inside.
Moments later, Calvin took the lead for good at 40-39 on a pair of free throws
by junior Kristen McDonald. The McDonald free throws sparked a 12-3 Calvin run
over the next five minutes as the Knights built a 50-42 lead.
Albion, (13-4 overall, 4-3 MIAA) in fact, would go over 11 minutes without a
field goal in the second half with its only points coming on free throws.
Albion would get no closer than six points the rest of the way as the Knights
pulled away for the win.
McDonald led the Knights with 16 points along with four assists with freshman
Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS) scoring 11 points and grabbing a career-high
15 rebounds while posting her second collegiate double-double. Sophomore
Katherine Pettinga (South Christian HS) also had 11 points along with three
assists with junior Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) scoring eight
points off the bench. Senior Kim Wolthuis (South Christian HS) also had a
strong game with five points, five assists, two blocked shots and two steals
with Winkle blocking six shots. Estelle also blocked three shots and ripped
down a season-high 13 rebounds.
Albion was led in scoring by freshman Ruthie Sventickas who had 12 points and
seven rebounds.
Albion shot just 26.6 percent from the floor and just 58.3 percent (14 of 24)
at the free throw line. Calvin shot 40.0 percent overall including 70.6
percent (12 of 17) at the line. The Knights also held a 46-41 rebounding
advantage including a 26-14 edge in the second half.
In addition, Calvin was 7 of 14 (.500) from three-point territory with
McDonald and Pettinga collecting three triples apiece.
