***CALVIN SPORTS REPORT EXTRA ****
The nationally-ranked Calvin men's club ice hockey team picked up a 2-0 victory
over rival Hope in front of a standing-room only crowd of 1,500 fans late
Saturday night at the Edge Ice Arena in Holland. Ranked number-one in the
latest Division III club rankings by the American Collegiate Hockey
Association, Calvin is now 21-0 on the season. Calvin's victory Saturday night
marked its third win of the season against Hope.
Saturday's victory culminated an exciting rivalry week for the Knights as they
also defeated rival Dordt College Monday night 5-2 at the Kentwood Ice Arena.
In Saturday's victory over Hope, Calvin received power-play goals from
sophomores Nick VerKuyl (Whitby, ON) and Max Sieplinga (Grand Rapids Christian
HS). VerKuyl scored on a rebound shot in the second period with Sieplinga and
junior Jason Koole (St. Catharines, ON) drawing assists. Sieplinga scored his
goal early in the third period on assists from VerKuyl and Jason Koole.
A pair of Calvin penalties with just over seven minutes remaining in the third
period gave Hope a two-man advantage but a gritty defensive effort by the
Knights kept the Flying Dutchmen off the scoreboard.
Freshman goaltender Gregory Clark (LaPorte, IN) was superb for the Knights in
nets throughout the game in gaining the shutout win in goal.
Calvin is back in action January 24 when it hosts Lawrence Tech University at
the Jolly Roger Ice Arena at 9:00 p.m.
