CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR THURSDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2003

WOMEN'S BASEKTBALL

A near record-setting performance from beyond the three-point arc propelled
the Calvin women's basketball team to a 90-55 victory over cross-town foe
Davenport University Thursday evening at the Calvin Fieldhouse.

Calvin (5-3) connected on nine of 12 attempts from three-point range in the
first half and 11 of 17 overall in cruising to the double-digit win.
Calvin's three-point field goal total was one short of matching the Calvin
single-game record of 12, set twice by Calvin's 1992-93 team that holds the
Calvin single-season record for three-point field goals made (162), attempted
(386) and three-point percentage (.420).

Calvin's 64.7 percent three-point shooting performance against Davenport
Thursday matched a Calvin single-game best in a game when the Knights connected
on 10 or more three-pointers.

In Thursday night's win, Calvin used its torrid perimeter attack to roll out
to a 49-30 halftime lead. Calvin broke the game open with a 21-1 run midway
through the opening 20 minutes and never looked back.

Senior Kim Wolthuis (South Christian HS) and junior Lisa Nanninga (Grand
Rapids Christian HS) led the way with 15 points apiece with Nanninga notching a
career scoring high in the process while also ripping down nine rebounds.
Wolthuis scored 13 of her 15 points in the first half while also collecting
five assists on the evening. Junior Kristen McDonald (West Catholic HS) also
was in double-figures with 12 points as she was four of five from three-point
territory. Wolthuis and sophomore Katherine Pettinga (South Christian HS) both
finished with three triples in the game with junior Rita Ouwinga (McBain
Christian HS) also sinking a three-point shot. Pettinga added five assists and
three steals with senior center Andrea Estelle (Allendale HS) chipping in with
nine rebounds.

Now in its second year as a varsity program, Davenport (5-8) was paced by
sophomore Karen Rugless who tossed in 16 points off the bench while freshman
Shannon Callaghan added nine points.

Calvin held a 47-33 rebounding edge and forced the visiting Panthers into 28
turnovers. Calvin also finished with a 48.6 percent field goal clip overall
for its second-best shooting performance of the season.

The victory was Calvin's third straight as the Knights head into first
semester exams. Calvin returns to action on Saturday, December 20 when it
hosts Adrian at 3:00 p.m. in an MIAA contest at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
