WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
SOUTH BEND, IN -- Calvin dropped its opener at the St. Mary's Roundball Classic
Friday evening, falling to four-time national champion Washington University of
St. Louis 79-40. Ranked ninth in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll of the
year, Washington (4-1) outscored Calvin 41-20 in the first half and 38-20 in
the second half.
Calvin (2-3) was also held to just 25.5 percent field goal shooting as the
Knights connected on just 12 of 47 attempts from the field. The Knights also
connected on 56 percent (14 of 25) of their attempts at the free throw line.
Washington shot 58.5 percent (31 of 53) from the field and 93.8 percent (15 of
16) from the line. Washington also held a 42-22 rebounding edge.
Freshman Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS) led the Knights in defeat with seven
points and two assists while junior Rita Ouwinga (McBain Christian HS) had six
points. Senior Kim Wolthuis (South Christian HS) also had a team-high five
rebounds.
The Washington backcourt duo of Kelly Manning and Lesley Hawley provided much
of the offense for the Bears as Manning had 16 points, seven rebounds, five
assists and four steals while Hawley had 15 points.
Calvin will face Illinois College in the consolation game Saturday at 1:00
p.m.. Host St. Mary's defeated Illinois College 82-67 in Friday's other first
round game.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
YPSILANTI -- Calvin sophomore Abby Johnson highlighted a stellar evening of
Calvin performances on the first day of competition at the Eastern Michigan
Invitational as the Grand Haven High School product shattered her own school
record in the 200 butterfly with a strong NCAA III conditional qualifying time
of 2:08.98 that was good for fifth place amid a field of NCAA Division I
competitors. Johnson's time shattered her own school record of 2:10.76. It is
also the third-best time in the event posted this year in NCAA III women's
swimming.
Johnson was part of three NCAA III conditional qualifying performances for the
Calvin women on Friday as freshman Rebekah Weima (Grand Rapids Christian HS)
took third in 100 freestyle with a time of 52.29. Weima's time was just nine
hundreths of a second off Calvin's school record in the event and is also the
third best time in the event in NCAA III women's swimming this year. Weima
currently owns the fastest time in the country in the 200 freestyle.
Johnson and Weima then provided the bookends of Calvin's 400 freestyle relay
team that took sixth with an NCAA III conditional qualifying time of 3:37.77.
Johnson led off the relay followed by freshman Liz Ingebrigtsen (Bensenville,
IL), senior Brittney Stevens (Mankato, MN) and Weima.
Other notable performances by the Calvin women on Friday included season best
perfomances from freshman Barbara Frazier (Port Huron) in the 200 breaststroke
(2:30.89, 10th place); Stevens in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.82, 11th place);
senior Sara TerHaar (Bradenton, FL) in the three-meter diving competition
(328.20; 15th place) and sophomore Lynn Visser (Jenison HS) in the 1,650
freestyle (18:55.47, 10th place).
The Calvin women are currently in fifth place in a field of nine teams with 106
points.
In the men's competition, the Knights are in fourth place in a field of seven
teams with 145 points. The Calvin men also posted three NCAA III conditional
qualifying performances on Friday with senior Brad White (Traverse City) and
junior Peter Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) leading the way. In the 100
freestyle, White took second in a field of NCAA Division I competitors with a
strong NCAA III conditional qualifying time of 46.84. Boumgarden also came up
with a strong NCAA III conditional qualifying time of 1:54.54 in taking fifth
in the 200 butterfly. The performances by White and Boumgarden are currently
the third-best this year in NCAA III men's swimming in their respective events.
In the 400 freestyle relay, Boumgarden and White also provided the bookends
with Boumgarden leading off and White serving as the anchor while freshmen
Peter Tuuk and Matt Herrema of Grand Rapids Christian High School filled spots
in the middle. The quartet took fourth with a season-best and NCAA III
conditional qualifying time of 3:08.95.
In the 100 freestyle, Tuuk also took seventh (49.14) with Herrema taking eighth
(49.23). Both times were season-best efforts. In the 200 breaststroke, Calvin
junior Ryan Preston (Richmond, IN) clocked in with a season-best time of
2:13.49 that was good for eighth place. In the 200 backstroke, Calvin
sophomore Luke Bagnall (Marshalltown, IA) took 14th with a season-best itme of
2:04.71 while junior Dan VanderHeide (Grand Rapids Christian HS) took 15th with
a season-best time of 2:05.82.
Both Calvin teams return to action tomorrow at the invitational.
