CALVIN MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER RECEIVES MIAA AWARD
For the first time in his career, Calvin senior Mike Standfest has received
MIAA Player of the Week honors. A native of Williamsburg and a graduate of Elk
Rapids High School, Standfest is this week's MIAA Co-Defensive Player of the
Week in men's soccer. Standfest shares this week's MIAA Defensive Player
of the Week award with Hope senior Kevney Dugan.
A four-year starter for the Knights, Standfest has been a stalwart at a
marking back position this fall and has been a key component of a Calvin
defense that has posted six shutouts in its last seven games. This past week,
Standfest helped Calvin post a pair of shutout victories as the Knights
defeated Adrian 5-0 on Tuesday and then topped Olivet 2-0 Saturday afternoon.
In conference play this fall, Calvin has allowed just four goals which leads
the MIAA. Hope's defense is close behind, having given up just five goals in
conference action.
Now ranked 15th in the latest NSCAA Division III Top-25 men's soccer poll,
Calvin is preparing for a critical week as the league-leading Knights travel to
second place Hope on Wednesday and then host Alma Saturday in the regular
season finale for both teams.
Calvin is currently 14-4-0 overall and 9-1-0 in the MIAA, one point ahead of
second place Hope which holds an 8-1-1 league record. Wednesday's game at
Hope will have MIAA championship implications as the Knights would clinch their
first outright MIAA title since 1987 with a victory and would remain in first
place with a tie. If Hope should win however, the Flying Dutchmen would move
into first place by one point with the opportunity to win the outright MIAA
title and gain the league's automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament with a
victory at Albion Saturday. Calvin and Hope are both ranked in the Great Lakes
region as the Knights are ranked second and Hope is ranked fifth. Calvin has
won its last 10 games including its last nine conference games. Included in
the winning streak was a 1-0 victory over a visiting Hope team on October 11.
Calvin has not won at Hope since 1999 however. Wednesday's game will start
at 3:00 p.m..
Calvin Men's Soccer Team Ranked 15th In Latest Division III National Poll
GRAND RAPIDS - For the second straight week, the Calvin men's soccer team
has gained its highest-ever national ranking. The Knights are ranked 15th in
this week's NSCAA Division III Top-25 poll, up one spot from a week ago when
Calvin cracked the national rankings for the first time since 1991 and gained
its highest-ever national ranking.
In addition, Calvin is ranked second in the latest Great Lakes Regional poll
with Denison of Ohio remaining in the top spot.
Calvin is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday when it journeys to Hope
for a crucial MIAA contest slated to start at 3:00 p.m. at Hope's Buys
Athletic Complex.
