    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR TUESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2003

    WOMEN'S SOCCER

    KALAMAZOO - The Calvin women's soccer team came away with a 2-1 victory on a
    cold and windy afternoon at Kalamazoo's McKenzie Field. The win was the
    eighth straight for Calvin and improves the record of the Knights to 7-2-1 in
    the MIAA and 9-4-1 overall.

    All the scoring came in the first half with Calvin jumping out on top with a
    goal by freshman Jill Capel (Unity Christian) off a pass from sophomore Noelle
    Berghuis (Unity Christian) in the 15th minute. It was the team-leading 15th
    goal of the year for Capel. Calvin scored its second and deciding goal when
    junior Linnea Butler (Shelton, WA) netted a pass from freshman Sarah Weesies
    (Kalamazoo Christian) for her first goal of the season in the 23rd minute.
    Kalamazoo cut the deficit to one on a goal by Jesse Geiger in the 39th minute
    but never was able to equal the score. Goaltender Lisa Campbell (Gull Lake)
    got the victory in net for Calvin, playing all 90 minutes of the game while
    making one save.

    Calvin remains in second place in the MIAA and is now three points behind
    league-leading Hope College. Calvin will be back in action at home on
    Saturday, October 25 against Albion College. Saturday's game is scheduled to
    start at noon.

    Volleyball

    For the ninth straight year the Calvin volleyball team has reached the 20-win
    plateau. The Knights defeated Tri-State in straight games 30-8, 30-17, 31-29
    Tuesday evening at the Calvin Fieldhouse. The non-conference victory allows the
    Knights to improve to 20-5 overall.

    Calvin used a 12-0 run midway through the first game to go ahead 16-1 on its
    way to a 30-8 game one victory. After winning game two, 30-17, the Knights hung
    on for a 31-29 win in the third game.

    The Knights were paced by junior middle-hitter Kara Kuipers (Unity Christian)
    who recorded 13 kills and two blocks. Sophomore Kristine Hendricks (Cincinnati,
    OH/Turpin) added 10 kills while freshman Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH/Munroe Falls)
    chipped in seven kills. Junior Kristin DeGroot (Tulare, CA/Central Valley
    Christian) tallied 13 digs and senior setter Deb Frieswyk (Holland Christian)
    dished out 28 assists.

    Calvin will be back in action on Thursday, hosting Olivet College in a league
    match scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
