WOMEN'S SOCCER
Neither snow, hail or brisk winds could slow down the offensive attack of the Calvin Knights on Wednesday afternoon as the Knights toppled the Comets of Olivet by a 6-1 score. Wednesday's game at Calvin Field was marked by strong gusts of winds allowed with intermitent snow and hail showers.
The victory was Calvin's third straight and it allowed the Knights to reach the .500 mark overall for the first time all year as they improved to 4-4-1. In addition, Calvin climbed above the .500 mark in conference play for the first time, improving to 3-2-1 in league play. The Knights remain locked in a third place tie with St. Mary's in the MIAA standings.
Calvin scored three goals in each half with freshman Jennifer Evans (Derry, PA) notching a hat-trick by scoring all three of Calvin's second half goals.
Freshmen Jill Capel (Unity Christian HS) and Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian HS) also continued their hot play as Capel finished with a goal and an assist while Weesies had a goal and two assists. Weesies continues to lead the Knights in scoring with nine goals, six assists and 24 points while Capel is close behind with seven goals, 4 assists and 18 points.
Also notching a first half goal for the Knights was sophomore Kara Zuidema (San Marcos, CA), her second of the year. Seniors Dana Haan (Lynden, WA) and Erin Sargent (Forest Hills Central HS) along with junior Linnea Butler (Shelton, WA) also were credited with assists on the afternoon.
Stacey Stickney scored the only goal of the game for Olivet as she capitalized on a Calvin defensive miscue. The goal came in the 16th minute of play and allowed the Comets to close to within 2-1. Just 15 seconds later, Weesies came back with a goal for the Knights, ripping in a shot off a lead pass from Haan.
Calvin never looked back from there as it finished with a 27-5 shots at goal advantage.
Freshman goaltenders Lisa Campbell (Gull Lake HS) and Megan VanderVliet (Oakville, ON) split time in nets for the Knights with Campbell picking up one save and VanderVliet two saves. Sophomore goaltender Gretchen Ford had six saves in defeat for the Comets (0-8-2 overall, 0-5-0 MIAA).
