Jim Timmer Jr. Returns to Alma Mater as Men's Golf Coach
Jim Timmer Jr. has returned home.
A 1991 Calvin College graduate and a native of Grand Rapids, the 35-year old
Timmer has returned to his alma mater as men's golf coach and as an associate
physical education professor.
Timmer replaces his father Jim Timmer Sr. - who retired from Calvin as men's
golf coach and as a professor of physical education this spring.
The younger Timmer is returning to Calvin after spending the past nine years
at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. At Baldwin-Wallace, Timmer served
as an assistant professor in the Division of Health and Physical Education. He
also served nine years as assistant men's basketball coach, eight years as
assistant baseball coach and the past year as the head men's golf coach.
In his first year as head men's golf coach, Timmer led the Baldwin-Wallace
men's golf team to a third place finish at the nine-team Ohio Athletic
Conference (OAC) Championships which were held this past May in Findlay, Ohio.
Timmer's Baldwin-Wallace team was led by sophomore Steve Weir who claimed OAC
medalist honors with a two-day score of 150 and was named the OAC Brian Unk
Most Outstanding Golfer.
As part of his academic duties at Baldwin-Wallace, Timmer was heavily involved
in the sports management program. In addition to teaching sports management
courses, Timmer helped arrange student internships with professional sports
franchises such as the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Rockers, Cleveland
Cavaliers and Toledo Mud Hens.
After receiving his bachelor's degree from Calvin in 1991, Timmer earned a
Master's degree of Science (1993) and a Ph.D. in sports administration (1995)
at the University of New Mexico.
While a student at Calvin from 1987-1991, Timmer was a four-year member of the
baseball and basketball teams. In baseball, he was a first team All-MIAA
selection in 1987 at shortstop and was a second team All-MIAA selection at the
position the next three years. A point guard in basketball, Timmer was a
member of three Calvin teams that reached the NCAA III Tournament including
Calvin's first team to reach the NCAA III Final Four (1990). Timmer holds the
Calvin single-season record for three-point field goal percentage (51.1%) and
is third on the all-time Calvin list for made three-point field goals with 169
career trifectas.
As a fifth-year senior at Calvin in 1991, Timmer served as a student assistant
coach on the Calvin men's basketball team and then received Calvin's Bere'
Memorial Award, given to Calvin's top senior male student-athlete.
Timmer is also a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. As a prep
athlete, he was a three-sport standout in football, basketball and baseball
where he received All-City accolades in all three sports over the course of his
high school career.
Timmer and his wife Kathy (Hulst) are parents of three children, Anna,
Christian and Gabrielle. His wife is a Holland Christian High School (1986)
and Calvin College (1990) graduate and a former member of the Calvin women's
basketball team.
"It is absolutely a privilege and honor to return to my alma mater," said
Timmer. "It has always been a dream of mine to return here as a teacher and
coach. The only place I would have left my position at Baldwin Wallace for is
Calvin College."
Calvin men's athletic director Dr. Marv Zuidema also offered enthusiastic
words for Timmer's return to the Calvin campus. "Dr. Timmer has proved himself
to be an outstanding teacher and coach at Baldwin-Wallace and we feel very
fortunate to have him join our staff," said Zuidema. "He has a keen sense for
physical education and he is very familiar with the Calvin athletic tradition.
He is part of the next generation of educators who will lead our department in
the future."
Timmer takes over a Calvin men's golf team that finished fourth in the final
MIAA standings last fall after finishing third in 2001 and second in 2000. The
Knights are expected to return nine letterwinners this fall.
"It is definitely an honor to take over the men's golf position from my
father," said Timmer. "Calvin's athletic tradition is well known and I'm just
looking to contribute as men's golf coach. I feel very good about our
returning golfers as well as our newcomers and I am anxiously looking forward
to the upcoming season."
The Calvin men's golf team is scheduled to open its 2003 fall campaign on
September 5 and 6 when it competes at the Olivet College Comet Classic at the
Bedford Valley Country Club. The first MIAA outing of the year is scheduled to
be held on September 9 at the Medalist Golf Club with Albion College serving as
host.
