Calvin Teams Receive MIAA Team GPA Award
A record seven Calvin College teams have received the MIAA Team GPA Award.
The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member
colleges recognizes conference athletic teams who achieved a 3.3 or better
grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2002-03 academic year.
This is the fifth year the award has been presented.
Calvin had five women's teams honored and two men's teams. Calvin teams
receiving the award include the volleyball team, women's track and field
team, softball team, women's cross country team, women's soccer team,
men's golf team and men's track and field team.
Calvin's highest ranked team is its women's volleyball team which posted a
cumulative team GPA of 3.530 to rank seventh among the 50 teams honored among
the MIAA member colleges. It also marks the second straight year that the
Calvin volleyball team has been so honored. The volleyball team was led this
year by head coach Amber Warners.
Warners also coached the Calvin softball team that posted a 3.397 GPA to
receive the award for the first time.
Honored for the fifth consecutive year is the Calvin women's cross country
team. Under the direction of head coach Nancy Meyer, the women's cross
country team compiled a team GPA of 3.366. The women's cross country team is
one of 13 MIAA teams to have received the award every year since the award was
initiated in 1998-99.
With a cumulative team GPA of 3.476, the women's track and field team is
also receiving the award for the second straight year. The women's track
and field team is led by head coach Jong-Il Kim.
Kim also led the men's track and field team which is receiving the MIAA Team
GPA Award with a cumulative team GPA of 3.377.
Calvin's highest ranked men's athletic team is its men's golf team which
ranks 18th overall with a 3.463 GPA. Led by head coach Jim Timmer, the Calvin
men's golf team also ranks as the second best MIAA men's athletic team,
surpassed only by the Alma men's tennis team with a 3.465 GPA.
The 2002-03 academic year brought a wealth of academic honors for Calvin
athletes as 12 individuals received Verizon Academic All-District honors with
one athlete receiving Verizon Academic All-America honors. Topping the list of
honorees was senior Joel Klooster of Chatham, Ontario, who was named to the
Verizon Academic All-America first team in men's cross country/track and
field.
Also receiving Verizon Academic All-District honors in cross country track and
field were seniors Annie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian HS), Mandy
VanDenBosch (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Brian Paff (National City, CA),
juniors Jessie Lair (Southfield Christian HS), Tim Avery (Rochester, NY) and
Hendrik Kok (Lynden, WA) and sophomore Laura Hamilton (Downers Grove, IL).
In addition, senior Becky Austen (Pembroke, ON) and sophomore Lea Bareman
(Unity Christian HS) received Verizon Academic All-District honors in softball
while seniors Ryan Johnson (Grand Haven HS) and Katie Nagelkirk (Holland
Christian HS) were so honored in swimming and diving.
Finally, 92 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the MIAA Academic Honor
Roll including four individuals who were named to the list for a fourth
straight year. The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a
minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2002-03
academic year.
Receiving MIAA Academic Honor Roll recognition for a fourth straight year from
Calvin are seniors Aaron Bouw (Unity Christian HS/men's soccer), Jessica
Huisjen (Lansing Christian HS/volleyball), Joel Klooster (men's track and
field) and Brian Paff (men's cross country/track and field).
