CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MAY 14, 2003 (PART TWO)
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
NAPERVILLE, IL -- Following the lead of a senior teammate, Calvin freshman
Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) may have placed herself in position to nab
a berth to the NCAA III Track and Field Championships next week in the
heptathlon.
Hendricks concluded the two-day heptathlon competition with an NCAA III
provisional qualifying score of 4,326 points that as of Wednesday, would have
placed her 12th on the NCAA III qualifying list in the event. The NCAA is
expected to take a field of between 16-18 competitors in the heptathlon to the
NCAA III Championships next week at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New
York.
Hendricks compiled her NCAA III provisional qualifying score at a last-chance
meet hosted by North Central College Wednesday. There are several last-chance
meets taking place across the country yet this week at the NCAA III level. The
official qualifying field for the national meet is expected to be announced
next Monday night.
Hendricks had previously posted an NCAA III provisional qualifying score of
4,134 points but on Tuesday and Wednesday, she upper her total by nearly 200
points. Hendricks entered Wednesday with 2,654 points after a strong set of
Tuesday performances (shot put, high jump, 200 meters and 100 hurdles). On
Wednesday, she posted a mark of 16-10 1/2 in the long jump, a mark of 90-10 in
the javelin and a time of 2:35.15 in the 800 meters, following right on the
heels of senior teammate Annie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian High School).
VanderLaan took first in the heptathlon with a two-day total of 4,490 points.
She has already qualified automatically for nationals with a score of 4,812
points earlier this spring. On Wednesday, VanderLaan went 17-2 3/4 in the long
jump, 80-4 in the javelin and 2:34.84 in the 800.
In the men's decathlon, Calvin senior Ben Talsma (Western Michigan Christian
High School) entered Wednesday with a strong total of 3,413 points. In the 110
high hurdles Wednesday morning, Talsma, tripped on a hurdle and suffered a hard
fall. Slowed by the fall, Talsma was unable to complete all of the events in
the 10-event competition and did not complete a final score.
A large group of Calvin athletes are scheduled to return to North Central
Friday night for their final last-chance meet of the year.
