Calvin Softball Players Receive Verizon Academic All-District IV Honors
GRAND RAPIDS, MI * A pair of Calvin College softball players have been named to the Verizon Academic All-District IV softball team in the college division. Named to the academic honor squad from Calvin are senior Becky Austen and sophomore Lea Bareman.
The college division of the Verizon Academic All-America program includes NCAA II, NCAA III and NAIA schools. The Verizon Academic All-District and All-America teams are selected by the College Sports Information Director's Association of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible for nomination, a player must be a starter or a key reserve with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20.
As members of the All-District first team, Austen and Bareman now advance to the national ballot and are eligible for Verizon Academic All-America consideration.
Austen is a native of Pembroke, Ontario. She is also a graduate of Fellowes High School. A four-year starter in the infield for Calvin, Austen is receiving Verizon Academic All-District IV honors for the second time in her career as she received second team honors last spring. Austen played the bulk of her games this year at second base while also filling in at shortstop occasionally. Austen finished the year with a .340 batting average, 19 runs scored, 18 RBI's and an on-base percentage of .407. The number-two hitter in the Calvin lineup, Austen also collected a team-high 17 sacrifice hits. In addition, she swiped 12 bases in 13 attempts allowing her to finish her career with 28 stolen bases on 30 attempts. Defensively, Austen was superb, compiling a .961 fielding percentage, committing just six errors in 155 fielding chances.
Austen is a sports medicine major and has served as a student athletic trainer during her four years at Calvin College. Austen will graduate later this month and will then prepare to attend law school at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. Austen has been a seven-time member of the Calvin Dean's List and a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
Bareman is from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Unity Christian High School. Bareman served primarily as Calvin's designated player this spring and batted .340 with 28 runs scored and 15 RBI's. She also collected five doubles and one home run to help build a slugging percentage of .426. Bareman also swiped two bases during the year and finished with an on-base percentage of .370.
An elementary education major with a minor in Spanish, Bareman carries a 3.46 grade point average. She has also played one year of junior varsity basketball at Calvin.
Calvin finished the year with a 24-13 overall record and tied for second with Albion and Olivet in the final MIAA standings. Calvin took second in the MIAA regular season standings with a 10-4 record and then took fourth at the four-team MIAA Tournament last weekend. Calvin's overall record this year was its finest since the 1997 season when it finished 28-15 and gained a share of the final MIAA championship
