CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 29, 2003
SOFTBALL
Calvin upped its record to 24-11 and its winning streak to eight games with a
doubleheader sweep at Rochester College Tuesday afternoon.
In the opener, Calvin claimed an 8-0 win in a game shortened to five innings
because of the mercy-rule. In game two, Calvin rolled to a 10-2 win to
complete the sweep.
Freshman Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern HS) picked up the win in game one as
she struck out five batters and walked just one in three innings of work. Cole
(5-5) retired nine of the 11 batters she faced and allowed just one hit.
Sophomore Kara VanKooten (Anchorage, AK) also tossed two innings of shutout
relief. Calvin collected six hits and capitalized on five Rochester errors to
pick up the win. Calvin scored three runs in the second and three runs in the
third with sophomore Abby Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) belting her
second home run of the season in the third inning with one runner on base.
Calvin then scored two unearned runs in the fourth and held Rochester scoreless
over the next inning-and-a-half to close out the win. Konyndyk had two of
Calvin's hits in the win while senior Becky Austen (Pembroke, ON) swiped her
12th base of the year.
Int he nightcap, freshman Jill Scholten (Holland Christian HS) and sophomore
Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont HS) combined on the mound with Scholten gaining the
victory to improve to 3-1 on the year. Scholten struck out three batters and
allowed just two hits in four innings of work
Calvin scored two runs in the top of the second as freshman Erinn Voss (Tinley
Park, IL) delivered an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch.
Leading 5-2, Calvin put the game out of reach with five runs in the top of the
seventh as sophomore Lea Bareman (Unity Christian HS) came up with a two-run
RBI double and sophomore Sarah Piersma (Grand Rapids Christian HS) ripped an
RBI triple. The triple was one of two extra-base hits for Piersma in the win
as she clubbed her first collegiate home run in the sixth -- a two-run blast --
that gave Calvin a 5-1 lead at the time.
Calvin outhit Rochester 6-4 in the win with freshman Jeanne Cole (Mason County
Eastern HS) also collecting a double for her 13th extra-base hit of the season.
Calvin will now prepare for the double-elimination MIAA Tournament Friday and
Saturday at Alma College. Second seeded Calvin will face third seeded Albion
in a first round game Friday at 11:00 a.m. A RealAudio broadcast of the game
