CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 2, 2003 (Part one)

    SOFTBALL

HOLLAND - A doubleheader split allowed Calvin to claim its first victory over Hope since 1999 and snap a seven-game losing streak against its rival. In the opener, Calvin claimed a 2-1 come-from-behind win. In the nightcap, Calvin threatened with another comeback effort before falling 3-2.

The Knights are now 11-6 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA. Wednesday's twinbill marked the MIAA opener for both Calvin and Hope.

In game one, Calvin trailed 1-0 after Hope (9-8 overall, 1-1 MIAA) scored a run with a pair of doubles in the bottom of the fourth. Calvin then came back with two runs in the top of fifth with sophomore Abby Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) delivering a clutch two-out two-run pinch-hit single up the middle that scored senior Sandy VanLeeuwen (Unity Christian HS) and sophomore Lea Bareman (Unity Christian HS). VanLeeuwen had reached base on a one-out error and Bareman followed with a single to right. Both runners moved up a base on a groundout by sophomore pitcher Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont HS). Konyndyk then delivered a two-out single up the middle.

Heyboer then proceeded to retire nine of the next 10 Hope batters. The only Hope runner to reach base in the final three frames came in the sixth on a Calvin error with two outs.

Heyboer recorded the 20th complete-game pitching performance of her collegiate career in upping her record to 6-2 on the year. Heyboer scattered four hits while striking out two and walking only one. Calvin collected only three hits in the contest with Heyboer joining Bareman and Konyndyk with singles in the contest.

In game two, Hope built a 3-0 lead with single runs in the second, third and sixth innings. Calvin then rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth on the strength of two hits, a walk and an error. Junior Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern HS) led off the inning with a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Sarah Piersma (Grand Rapids Christian HS). Junior Trisha Balkema (Highland, IN) then delivered a single through the left side. With two outs, VanLeeuwen slapped a double into right field to score Piersma and Balkema and moved up to third on an error. A ground out to the pitcher ended the Calvin threat and in the bottom of the seventh, the Knights were retired in order.

Hope outhit Calvin 6-4 in game two with VanLeeuwen collecting two hits, Balkema one hit and sophomore Angie Sietsema (Grandville HS) one hit.

Freshman Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern HS) took the loss for Calvin to fall to 2-3 on the year as she walked three and struck out three in seven innings of work. Hope senior Andrea Adams picked up the save in relief of freshman starter Megan Drooger (2-2). Adams (6-4) took the loss in game one but did not allow an earned run.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts nationally-ranked and defending MIAA champion Alma in a doubleheader. The twinbill against the 11th-ranked Scots is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. A RealAudio broadcast of the doubleheader will be available at www.Calvin.edu/sports.
