CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 25, 2003
SOFTBALL
A 10-hit outburst in the nightcap allowed Calvin to gain a doubleheader split
with visiting Saginaw Valley State University Tuesday afternoon at Calvin
Field. After falling 9-2 in game one, Calvin (7-3) bounced back for a 10-3
victory in game two against the visiting Cardinals (10-6).
With the score knotted 3-3, Calvin broke through for six runs in the bottom of
the fifth inning with junior Rachel Dyksterhouse (Kalamazoo Christian HS) and
sophomore Abby Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) delivering a pair of
two-run RBI singles in the rally.
Calvin sophomore Lea Bareman (Unity Christian HS) put the capper on the contest
with a solo home run in the sixth that marked the first home run of her
collegiate career. Bareman is off to a sizzling start to the 2003 season as
she is batting .500 (18-for-36) with 12 runs scored and six runs batted in.
Bareman went 2-for-4 and scored three runs in the game two win while senior
Sandy VanLeeuwen (Unity Christian HS) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
Sophomore Sarah Piersma (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also collected a pair of
singles in the Calvin win. Freshman Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern HS)
picked up the complete-game victory as she scattered eight hits in seven
innings of work to run her season record to 2-1.
In the opener, Saginaw Valley State broke the game open with four runs in the
fifth and two more in the sixth as the Cardinals outhit the Knights 11-7.
Junior Keri Cole (Mason County Eastern HS) put Calvin on the scoreboard with a
solo home run to right in the bottom of the third. Junior Tricia Balkema
(Highland, IN) collected two of Calvin's hits including an RBI double in the
fifth that plated Calvin's second run of the game.
Sophomore Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont HS) took the loss for Calvin as she dropped
to 3-1 on the year. Heyboer struck out two and walked three in just over four
innings of work with sophomore Kara VanKooten (Anchorage, AK) coming on in
relief.
Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it travels to cross-town rival
Aquinas for a non-conference game scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
BASEBALL
Calvin dipped to 3-7 on the year with a 13-6 loss to visiting Northwood
University Tuesday afternoon at Calvin Field. After falling behind 5-1, Calvin
battled back with three runs in the bottom of the third and a run in the fourth
to tie the game. Senior Arie Eppinga (Walnut Creek, CA) collected doubles in
the third and fourth.
Northwood came back with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to
take a 9-5 lead. Eppinga answered with a solo homer to left in the bottom of
the sixth but the Knights would not score again. The Timberwolves (8-9) added
four insurance runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away.
Freshman Ben Buikema (Lake Odessa Lakewood HS) took the loss to fall to 0-2 on
the year as he gave up six runs in 4 and a third innings of work. Only two of
his runs allowed were earned however as the Knights committed two errors in the
first three innings.
Freshmen Brandon Oldenbroek (Unity Christian HS) and Kory Ciesielski along with
junior Dean Thompson (Ogemaw Heights HS) and sophomore Jim Deters (Kalamazoo
Christian HS) also saw time on the hill for the Knights.
Trent Mulder (2-1) picked up the win for Northwood in relief of starter Mike
Brown. Calvin collected 12 hits in defeat with Eppinga leading the way with a
4-for-5 performance at the plate that included three RBI's. Junior Aaron
Griffith (Manhattan, KS) also went 2-for-5 at the plate with an RBI while
freshmen Mike Aggen (Evergreen Park, IL) also had two hits.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it opens its 2003 MIAA campaign at
Albion. Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. Albion will provide
