Track Teams Capture Titles at Emory Springtime Invitational

    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 22, 2003 (FINAL REPORT)

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

    ATLANTA, GA -- The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams came up with
    a sensational day of performances at the Emory Springtime Invitational on
    Saturday as the Calvin men took first in a 17-team field with 144 points while
    the Calvin women took first in a 19-team field with 192 points.

    Calvin highlights of the men's competition are as follows:

    *Sophomore Nate Meckes (Westland Lutheran HS) first in the shot put and discus
    with NCAA III provisional qualifying and career best performances. Meckes went
    54-2 1/2 in the shot put and 161-5 in the discus. Both marks were significant
    increases for Meckes in his personal records in both events.

    *Sophomore Any Yazzie (Rehobath, NM) first in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with
    an NCAA III provisional qualifying and career-best time of 9:18.65.

    *Senior Cameron Baron (Lake Stevens, WA) first place in the high jump with an
    NCAA III provisonal qualifying mark of 6-8 1/4.

    *Senior Jon Hutchful (Accra, Ghana) first place in the triple jump with a mark
    of 44-8.

    *Senior Joel Klooster (Chatham, Ontario) first place in the 1,500 meters with a
    time of 3:57.43.

    *Freshman Jason Koning (South Christian HS) third in the pole vault (13-11
    3/4).

    *Freshman Justin Grasmeyer second in the discus with a throw of 146-6.

    *Senior Nick VanderPlas (McBain Christian HS) second in the shot put (49-9,
    career-best) and fourth in the discus (142-8).

    *Senior Joel Post (DeMotte, IN) third in the 800 meters (1:56.86, career-best)

    *Sophomore Chris Freibel fourth in the 100 meters (11.33)

    *Freshman Brian VanDyken (Grand Rapids Christian HS) third in the 400 meters
    (50.69)

    *junior Kris Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) second in the 10,000 meters
    (31:48.55, career-best)

    *junior Dave Haagsma (South Christian HS) third in the 10,000 meters
    (31:55.99).

    Calvin highlights of the women's competition are as follows:

    *Senior Liz Frens (Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a career-best throw (by more
    than a foot) in the shot put (42-01 1/4) that was good for first place and was
    a strong NCAA III provisional qualifying mark.

    *Junior Katie Corner (Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) first in the discus
    with a season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 146-11.

    *Senior Annie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking first in the 100
    meter hurdles (14.88, NCAA III provisional qulaiyfing performance) and second
    in the 200 meters (25.99).

    *Sophomore Sue Abbring (Highland, IN) taking first in the 100 meters (12.76)
    and 200 meters (25.78)

    *Sophomore Laura Hamilton (Downers Grove, IL) taking first in the 400 meter
    hurdles (1:05.71).

    *Freshman Cami Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking third in the 800
    meters with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 2:16.19.

    *Juniors Sarah Hastings (Traverse City Central HS) and Jessie Lair (Southfield
    Christian HS) taking third and fourth respectively with NCAA III provisional
    qualifying times in the 5,000 meters. Hastings was third in 17:41.17 and Lair
    fourth in 17:49.32.

    *Freshman Missy Smith (Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking first in the pole
    vault with an NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 11-5 3/4.

    *Senior Tami VerMeulen (Holland Christian HS) taking second in the 3,000 meter
    steeplechase with a time of 11:42.75.

    Both Calvin track and field teams will now prepare to host the Grand Rapids
    Invitational next Saturday.
