CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, MARCH 15, 2003 (Part One)
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
ATLANTA, GA -- Calvin senior Katie Nagelkirk closed out her collegiate career
in strong fashion, taking 11th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.57
Saturday night at the NCAA III Championships at Emory University.
The performance allowed Nagelkirk to claim the fourth honorable mention
All-America citation of her career including her second of the three-day meet
over the weekend. A native of Zeeland and a graduate of Holland Christian High
School, Nagelkirk earned a spot in Saturday's consolation final with a time of
53.09 in the prelims that allowed her to grab the 16th and final spot for the
consolation finals.
Nagelkirk's time Saturday night was only four-tenths of a second off her own
school record in the event. It also came on the heels of an All-America swim
in the 200 freestyle Friday night and an honorable mention All-America effort
in the 50 freestyle on Thursday.
"Katie was hoping to advance to the finals tonight so she was a little
disappointed with her time in the prelims," said Calvin swim coach Dan
Gelderloos. "I was very proud of her to bounce back the way she did this
evening. She closed out her collegiate career like a champion."
Nagelkirk's 11th place finish in the 100 freestyle allowed Calvin to finish
34th in the final team standings with 28 points.
Calvin freshman Abby Johnson of Grand Haven High School also competed in the
200 butterfly prelims Saturday morning. Johnson posted the 21st fastest time
in the prelims with a time of 2:11.43.
