Veenstra Named to All-MIAA 1st Team in Men's Basketball for Fourth Straight
Year
Calvin College senior Jeremy Veenstra has joined an elite group of MIAA
men's basketball players.
For the fourth straight year, Veenstra has been named to the All-MIAA first
team in men's basketball. In being so honored, Veenstra is just the sixth
player in MIAA men's basketball history to achieve first team All-MIAA
accolades four straight years. In addition, he is the third player in Calvin
men's basketball history to achieve the distinction as his cousin Mark
Veenstra was a four-time first team All-MIAA selection from 1973-1977 while
Steve Honderd was also so honored from 1989-1993. Other first team All-MIAA
selections in men's basketball have included Don Mulder (1943-1948) and Duane
Bosma (1993-1997) of Hope and Willie Dawkins (1973-1977) of Alma.
This past year, Veenstra averaged 16.6 points and 7.6 rebounds a game
including 16.5 points and 7.8 rebounds a game in conference play, placing him
third in the league in scoring and fourth in rebounding. He was also tied for
third in assists-per-game (3.5), tied for fifth in steals-per-game (1.58) and
tied for eighth in blocked shots (10).
A native of Kalamazoo and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School,
Veenstra finished third on the Calvin career scoring list with 1,947 points.
He also finished second in rebounds (897), third in assists (329) and fourth in
blocked shots (124). In 50 conference games, Veenstra finished with 855 points
and 373 rebounds, placing him eighth on the MIAA career list for rebounds and
11th in scoring.
Named to the All-MIAA second team from Calvin are juniors Chris Prins and
Kevin Broene. Prins is from Escondido, California. He is a graduate of
Escondido Calvin Christian High School.
A 6-4 forward, Prins averaged 12.7 points and 3.8 rebounds a game this year
including 12.2 points and 3.5 rebounds a game in 12 league games. Prins
finished 10th in the MIAA scoring race and led the league in free throw
percentage, converting 34 of 38 attempts for an 89.5 percent clip. With one
year of college ball still ahead of him, Prins is closing in on 1,000 points
for his career as he closed out the 2002/2003 season with 959 career points.
A 6-3 shooting guard, Broene hails from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of
Grand Rapids Christian High School. Broene is making his second straight
appearance on the All-MIAA second team. This year, Broene averaged 14.6 points
and 3.3 rebounds a game. He also led the Knights in three-point field goals as
he converted 56 of 128 attempts for a 43.8 percent three-point clip which ranks
as the eighth-best single-season three-point field goal percentage in Calvin
men's basketball history. In 11 league games, Broene averaged 14.5 points
and 3.3 rebounds a game. Broene finished seventh in the MIAA scoring race and
sixth in three-point field goal percentage (.466 in league play). He was also
fourth in three-point field goals made with 27. Heading into his senior year,
Broene is ninth on the Calvin career list in made three-point field goals with
94.
Calvin senior Rob Dykstra also received honorable mention recognition from the
MIAA coaches. A native of Byron Center and a graduate of Wyoming Tri-unity
Christian High School, Dykstra averaged 8.3 points and 6.7 rebounds a game this
year. In 12 league games, he finished fifth in the MIAA in rebounding with an
average of 6.5 rebounds a game.
Calvin finished the year with a 16-11 record, reaching the 15-win plateau for
the 19th straight year. Calvin tied for third in the MIAA regular season
standings with a 7-5 conference mark. The Knights closed out their season last
Thursday with an 81-80 overtime defeat to Hope in the MIAA Tournament
semifinals.
