    CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FRIDAY, JANUARY 17, 2003

    MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

    The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams dropped a pair of
    hard-fought non-conference dual meets to visiting Grand Valley State University
    Friday night at the Bergsma Natatorium as the men dropped a 120-115 decision
    while the women were defeated 131-112.

    The Calvin men are now 4-4 overall in dual meet competition while the women are
    5-4.

    Calvin showed significant first place power in both swim competitions but the
    Lakers were able to pull ahead victories and depth in the diving events.

    In the men's dual meet, Calvin picked up six individual first place performances
    led by junior Brad White (Traverse City) who took home first place performances
    in the 200 freestyle (1:46.17) and 100 backstroke (54.93). Other first place
    individual performances included senior Ryan Johnson (Grand Haven) in the 50
    freestyle (22.25), senior A.J. Penninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 200
    IM (1:59.34), sophomore Peter Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) in the 100 butterfly
    (51.84) and sophomore Ryan Preston (Richmond, IN) in the 100 breaststroke
    (1:01.36). Penninga's time in the 200 IM was a season-best. Calvin's 200 medley
    relay team of White, Preston, Boumgarden and Johnson also took first place in a
    time of 1:38.24.

    In the women's dual meet, Calvin also splashed to six individual first place
    performances in the swimming events while also adding one first place
    performance in the relays.

    Senior Katie Nagelkirk (Holland Christian HS) picked up two of Calvin's first
    place individual performances, winning the 50 freestyle (24.62) and 100
    freestyle (53.99) events. Seniors Mara McGuin (Oak Park, IL) and Anne Kuiper
    (Houghton) were also winners Friday with McGuin winning the 1,000 freestyle
    (11:04.49) and Kuiper the 100 butterfly (1:02.80).

    Freshmen Abby Johnson (Grand Haven HS) and Lynn Visser also came home with first
    place swims as Johnson won the 200 IM (2:12.78) and Visser the 1,000 freestyle
    (11:04.49).

    Calvin's 200 medley relay team of senior Megan Bagnall (Elgin, IL), Kuiper,
    Johnson and freshman Jen Kool (Holland Christian HS) added a first place time of
    1:55.34.

    Both teams return to dual meet action tomorrow afternoon as they compete against
    Hillsdale and Ashland at Hillsdale. Saturday's competition is scheduled to
    begin at 1:00 p.m.
